5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

Your Alcedo thermometer requires 2 AAA batteries (included). To install or replace batteries:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Slide the cover open.
  3. Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

5.2 Initial Power On and Unit Selection

After installing batteries, press the Power/Measure button to turn on the thermometer. The device will perform a self-check and display the last reading. To switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C), locate the °F/°C switch on the side of the device and slide it to your desired unit.

6. Operating Instructions

Ensure the thermometer has been in the same room as the user for at least 30 minutes before measurement for optimal accuracy.

6.1 Forehead Mode (Adult/Child)

Use this mode for non-contact temperature measurement on the forehead. The probe cover must be attached.

  1. Ensure the probe cover is securely attached.
  2. Press the Power/Measure button to turn on the device.
  3. Press the Mode button to select either Adult Forehead or Child Forehead mode.
  4. Point the thermometer probe to the center of the forehead, approximately 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 inches) away from the skin surface.
  5. Press and release the Power/Measure button. The temperature will be displayed on the screen instantly.

Important: Ensure there is no sweat, water, or condensation on the skin during forehead measurement.

6.2 Ear Mode

Use this mode for accurate temperature measurement inside the ear canal. The probe cover must be removed.

  1. Gently remove the magnetic probe cover. The device will automatically switch to Ear mode.
  2. Press the Power/Measure button to turn on the device.
  3. Gently insert the probe into the ear canal. For children, gently pull the earlobe back and up to straighten the ear canal.
  4. Press and release the Power/Measure button. The temperature will be displayed instantly.

Important: Ear mode is not recommended for infants under 3 months. Ensure the ear canal is clean and free of earwax for accurate readings.

6.3 Object Mode

Use this mode to measure the temperature of surfaces, liquids (like bath water), or food.

  1. Ensure the probe cover is attached.
  2. Press the Power/Measure button to turn on the device.
  3. Press the Mode button to select Object mode.
  4. Point the thermometer probe to the center of the object, approximately 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 inches) away from the surface.
  5. Press and release the Power/Measure button. The temperature will be displayed instantly.

6.4 Silent Mode

To activate or deactivate silent mode, press and hold the Memory/Mute button for a few seconds until the mute icon appears or disappears on the display. This is useful for taking temperatures without disturbing a sleeping individual.

6.5 Memory Function

The thermometer automatically stores the last 20 temperature readings. To recall previous readings, press the Memory/Mute button briefly when the device is on. Each press will cycle through the stored readings.

6.6 Color-Coded Display and Fever Guidance

The display backlight changes color to provide a quick indication of temperature status:

  • Red: Elevated temperature (fever).

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning the Thermometer

Regular cleaning ensures accurate readings and extends the life of your thermometer.

  • The thermometer is designed for hand wash only. Do not immerse the device in water or other liquids.
  • To clean the probe lens: Gently wipe the lens with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol. Allow 5-10 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate completely before using the thermometer.
  • To clean the body of the thermometer: Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

7.2 Storage

Store the thermometer in its provided storage pouch in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.

8. Troubleshooting and Tips for Accurate Results

Tips for accurate results, including ensuring user and thermometer are in the same room for 30 minutes, cleaning the lens, ensuring no sweat on forehead, and not moving during measurement.

  • Inconsistent Readings:
    • Ensure both the user and thermometer have been in the same room for at least 30 minutes.
    • Check and clean the probe lens regularly. A dirty lens can affect accuracy.
    • For forehead mode, ensure there is no sweat, water, or condensation on the skin.
    • For ear mode, ensure the ear canal is clean and free of earwax.
    • Do not move the thermometer during measurement.
    • Do not hold the thermometer for too long as it is sensitive to heat from your hand.
    • If taking multiple readings, wait at least 10 seconds between measurements.
  • Device Not Turning On: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
