2. Important Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when performing maintenance on your engine. Failure to follow safety precautions can result in injury or damage.

  • Ensure the engine is turned off and cooled down before beginning any work.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent accidental starting.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and eye protection.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Dispose of used oil and filters responsibly according to local regulations.

3. Kit Contents

Verify all components are present and undamaged before starting the oil change procedure:

  • 4 Quarts Suzuki Ecstar V7000 Semi Synthetic 10W-40 4T Marine Engine Oil
  • 1 Quart Suzuki Ecstar Gear Oil SAE 90
  • 1 Suzuki Genuine Oil Filter (Part No. 16510-87J00)
  • 1 Drain Plug Gasket (Part No. 09168-12012)

4. Preparation

Before starting the oil change, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Appropriate wrenches or sockets for drain plugs and oil filter.
  • Oil drain pan with sufficient capacity (at least 5 quarts).
  • Funnel for refilling oil.
  • Clean rags or shop towels.
  • Torque wrench (recommended for proper tightening).

5. Engine Oil Change Procedure

  1. Warm Up Engine: Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, making it flow more easily. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool slightly before proceeding.
  2. Position Drain Pan: Place the oil drain pan directly beneath the engine oil drain plug.
  3. Remove Drain Plug: Carefully remove the engine oil drain plug. Allow all the old oil to drain completely into the pan.
  4. Replace Gasket: Once drained, clean the drain plug and replace the old gasket with the new drain plug gasket (09168-12012) from the kit.
  5. Reinstall Drain Plug: Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Do not overtighten.
  6. Remove Oil Filter: Place rags under the oil filter to catch any drips. Unscrew the old oil filter (16510-87J00) and remove it.
  7. Prepare New Filter: Apply a thin film of new engine oil to the rubber gasket of the new oil filter.
  8. Install New Filter: Screw on the new oil filter by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Refer to the filter's instructions or engine manual for precise tightening.
  9. Add New Oil: Locate the engine oil fill cap. Using a funnel, slowly add approximately 3.8 liters (4 quarts) of Suzuki Ecstar V7000 Semi Synthetic 10W-40 4T Marine Engine Oil.
  10. Check Oil Level: After adding oil, wait a few minutes for the oil to settle. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary, ensuring the level is between the minimum and maximum marks.
  11. Run Engine and Recheck: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil. Check for any leaks around the drain plug and oil filter. Turn off the engine, wait a few minutes, and recheck the oil level, topping off if needed.

6. Lower Unit Gear Oil Change Procedure

  1. Position Drain Pan: Place the drain pan under the lower unit.
  2. Remove Drain and Vent Screws: First, remove the lower drain screw, then remove the upper vent screw. This allows the gear oil to drain completely.
  3. Drain Oil: Allow all the old gear oil to drain into the pan. Note the color and consistency of the old oil; milky oil indicates water intrusion.
  4. Replace Gaskets: Replace the gaskets on both the drain and vent screws.
  5. Fill with New Gear Oil: Using a gear oil pump or a suitable method, pump the Suzuki Ecstar Gear Oil SAE 90 into the lower drain hole until it begins to flow out of the upper vent hole.
  6. Install Vent Screw: While the oil is still flowing out of the vent hole, quickly install and tighten the upper vent screw.
  7. Install Drain Screw: Remove the pump from the lower drain hole and immediately install and tighten the lower drain screw.

7. Disposal

Proper disposal of used engine oil, gear oil, and oil filters is essential for environmental protection. Do not pour used oil down drains or onto the ground.

  • Collect all used oil in a sealed container.
  • Take used oil and filters to an authorized recycling center or automotive service station that accepts used oil.
  • Check with your local municipality for specific recycling guidelines in your area.
