Setup and Preparation

Proper preparation of your new TUSA Freedom Elite mask is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent fogging during use. Follow these steps before your first dive:

  1. Initial Cleaning (Anti-Fog Preparation): New mask lenses often have a thin silicone film from the manufacturing process that causes fogging.
    • Apply a small amount of non-abrasive white toothpaste (not gel) to the inside and outside of the lens.
    • Gently rub the toothpaste over the entire lens surface with your finger for several minutes.
    • Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove all toothpaste residue. Repeat this process 2-3 times.
    • Alternatively, a commercial mask defogger or a mild dish soap can be used for initial cleaning.

  2. Strap Adjustment:
    • Place the mask gently on your face without the strap, ensuring a comfortable seal. Inhale slightly through your nose; the mask should suction to your face.
    • Position the strap high on the back of your head, above your ears.
    • Utilize the 180° Rotational Buckle System and the five-position strap angle adjustor for micro-adjustments to achieve a snug yet comfortable fit. The strap should be tight enough to create a seal but not so tight that it causes discomfort or leaves deep marks.

Operating Instructions

Once your TUSA Freedom Elite mask is properly fitted and prepared, you are ready for your underwater adventure. Remember to always follow safe diving practices and local regulations.

  1. Pre-Dive Defogging: Before each use, apply a small amount of commercial defogger or saliva to the inside of the lens. Rub it gently and rinse briefly with water. This creates a thin film that prevents condensation.
  2. Donning the Mask:
    • Hold the mask by the frame and pull the strap over your head.
    • Ensure your hair is clear of the mask skirt to prevent leaks.
    • Adjust the strap for a comfortable, watertight seal.

  3. Mask Clearing: If water enters your mask during a dive:
    • Press the top of the mask frame firmly against your forehead.
    • Exhale slowly through your nose. The exhaled air will push the water out from the bottom of the mask.
    • Continue exhaling until the mask is clear of water.
  4. Equalization: The soft silicone skirt and nose pocket allow for easy equalization of pressure during descent. Pinch your nose through the mask's nose pocket and gently blow to equalize.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance extends the life of your TUSA Freedom Elite mask and ensures continued performance.

  • Rinse After Each Use: After every dive, thoroughly rinse your mask with fresh, clean water. This removes salt, chlorine, and other contaminants that can degrade the silicone and lens.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use harsh detergents, solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the silicone skirt or scratch the lens.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Allow the mask to air dry completely in a shaded area before storing. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the silicone to yellow or crack over time.
  • Storage: Store your mask in its original protective case (Figure 2) or a dedicated mask box. Keep it away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and sharp objects.
  • Inspect Regularly: Periodically inspect the silicone skirt for tears or cracks, and the strap for signs of wear. Replace components as needed to maintain a proper seal and safety.

Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter with your diving mask:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Mask FoggingNew mask silicone film, lack of defogger, improper pre-dive preparation.Perform initial cleaning (toothpaste method) thoroughly. Use a quality defogger or saliva before each dive. Ensure proper rinsing.
Mask LeakingHair under skirt, improper strap adjustment, mask skirt damage, facial hair.Ensure no hair is trapped under the skirt. Adjust strap for snug fit (not too tight). Inspect skirt for damage. For facial hair, consider applying silicone grease or a thicker layer of defogger to the skirt area.
Discomfort/Pressure MarksStrap too tight, mask not suited for face shape.Loosen the strap slightly; the mask should seal with minimal pressure. The Freedom Technology is designed to minimize this, but if discomfort persists, re-evaluate fit.
