3.2 Diagnostic Functions

From the Main Menu, select 'Diagnostic' and press 'OK'. The scanner will automatically detect the vehicle's protocol. Once connected, you will see the Diagnostic Menu with various functions:

  • Read Codes: Displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the vehicle's computer. This includes Stored Codes (current issues), Pending Codes (intermittent issues), and Permanent Codes.
  • Erase Codes: Clears all stored DTCs and turns off the Check Engine Light (MIL). Ensure the underlying issue is resolved before erasing codes.
  • Live Data: Displays real-time data parameters from the vehicle's sensors, such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, O2 sensor readings, and more. This is crucial for monitoring vehicle performance and diagnosing intermittent problems.
  • Freeze Frame: Captures a snapshot of vehicle operating conditions at the moment a DTC was set. This data helps identify the conditions under which the fault occurred.
  • Vehicle Info: Retrieves vehicle identification information, such as VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), CALID, and CVN.
  • I/M Readiness: Checks the status of the vehicle's emission-related monitoring systems to determine if they have completed their diagnostic tests. This is essential for smog checks.
  • Mode 6 (On-Board Monitor Test): Accesses the results of on-board diagnostic monitoring tests for specific monitored systems that are not continuously monitored. This can help identify misfires or other component issues.
  • O2 Sensor Test: Retrieves O2 sensor monitoring test results from the vehicle's computer.
  • Component Test (Mode 8): Allows initiation of a leak test for the vehicle's EVAP system.
