Setup

Powering the Device

The A1X FOUR can be powered by four AA batteries or an optional AC adapter (Zoom AD-16). For optimal performance and extended use, an AC adapter is recommended. When using batteries, ensure they are correctly inserted according to the polarity markings in the battery compartment.

Connecting Your Instrument and Amplifier

  1. Connect your acoustic instrument to the A1X FOUR's input jack using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  2. Connect the A1X FOUR's output jack to your amplifier, PA system, or audio interface using another 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  3. If using a microphone, connect it to the MAA-1 mic adapter (if included with your model) and then connect the MAA-1 to the A1X FOUR's input.

Operating the A1X FOUR

Navigating Patches and Effects

The A1X FOUR features numerous preset patches and allows for user-created patches. Use the footswitches to scroll through patches or engage/disengage individual effects within a patch. The control knobs below the display allow for parameter adjustments of the selected effect.

Using the Expression Pedal

The integrated expression pedal can be assigned to control various effect parameters, such as volume, wah, or modulation speed, providing real-time expressive control over your sound.

Looper Functionality

The built-in looper allows for recording and overdubbing up to 30 seconds (64 beats) of CD-quality audio. This feature is ideal for practicing, creating layered performances, or developing song ideas.

Rhythm Section

Access 68 built-in rhythm patterns tailored for various musical styles. These patterns can be used independently or in conjunction with the looper to provide a rhythmic foundation for your playing.

Editing and Saving Patches

To customize effects or create new patches, enter edit mode. Adjust parameters using the control knobs and save your changes to one of the 50 memory locations. Refer to the detailed user manual for specific instructions on effect editing and saving procedures.

Maintenance

Cleaning

To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents, as these can damage the finish and internal components.

Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator shows low power, replace all four AA batteries with new ones. Ensure correct polarity. For optimal performance, consider using an AC adapter for longer sessions.

Firmware Updates

Periodically check the Zoom website for firmware updates. Updates can introduce new features, improve performance, or fix bugs. Use the Zoom Guitar Lab software to manage firmware updates and effects libraries.

Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Check battery installation and charge level, or ensure the AC adapter is securely connected and functioning.
  • No Sound: Verify all cable connections (instrument, output to amp). Check volume levels on the A1X FOUR and your amplifier. Ensure no effects are bypassed or set to zero output.
  • Unexpected Effects/Sound: Reset the unit to factory settings if custom patches are causing issues, or re-edit the problematic patch. Ensure instrument type settings are correct for acoustic modeling.
  • Computer Connection Issues: Ensure the correct drivers are installed and the Zoom Guitar Lab software is up to date. Try a different USB cable or port.
