3. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the safety and functionality of your steering wheel. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified marine technician.
3.1 Components Included
- Lewmar 13.5" Steering Wheel
- Ball Bearing PowerGrip Control Knob (pre-installed)
- Center Delrin Washer
- Center Hub Nut (5/8" thread for this model)
3.2 Installation Steps
- Prepare the Helm: Ensure your boat's steering helm has a standard 3/4" tapered shaft. Clean the shaft thoroughly.
- Check Hub Nut Compatibility: This model includes a 5/8" threaded hub nut, commonly used with newer Sea Star and other hydraulic helms. Older Teleflex and some mechanical helms typically use a 1/2" nut, while some metric manufacturers use M12. Verify your helm's thread size before installation.
- Position the Steering Wheel: Slide the Lewmar steering wheel onto the tapered shaft of the helm. Ensure it seats firmly and is aligned correctly.
- Install the Washer and Nut: Place the included Center Delrin Washer onto the shaft, followed by the Center Hub Nut.
- Tighten the Nut: Hand-tighten the hub nut, then use a wrench or socket (a 1 1/4 inch socket is typically required) to securely tighten it. Do not overtighten, but ensure it is snug to prevent movement.
- Verify PowerGrip Knob: Confirm the PowerGrip control knob spins freely and is securely attached to the wheel rim.

4. Operating Instructions
Operating the Lewmar steering wheel is intuitive, similar to standard boat steering wheels, with the added benefit of the PowerGrip control knob.
- Steering: Turn the wheel clockwise to steer to starboard (right) and counter-clockwise to steer to port (left).
- PowerGrip Control Knob: For quick and precise steering adjustments, especially during docking or tight maneuvers, utilize the PowerGrip control knob. Grasp the knob and rotate it to turn the wheel with minimal hand movement. The ball bearing design ensures smooth, low-friction rotation.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance will prolong the life and maintain the appearance of your Lewmar steering wheel.
- Cleaning: The 316 stainless steel construction is highly resistant to corrosion. Clean the wheel regularly with fresh water and a mild soap solution. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
- Polishing: To maintain the mirror-polished finish, use a marine-grade stainless steel polish periodically.
- PowerGrip Knob Inspection: Periodically check the PowerGrip control knob for smooth operation and secure attachment. Ensure the internal components (as shown in Figure 2.4) are free from debris.
- Fastener Check: Annually, or before extended voyages, verify that the hub nut is securely tightened.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Steering wheel feels loose or wobbly. | Hub nut is not sufficiently tightened. | Tighten the center hub nut securely using a 1 1/4 inch socket. Do not overtighten. |
| PowerGrip knob badge detaches. | The Lewmar badge on top of the PowerGrip knob may detach due to vibration or environmental factors (e.g., high wind speeds during towing). It is typically held by an O-ring. | Re-secure the badge if found. If lost, a replacement badge (Part number 85000590 "LEWMAR CAP FOR PG KNOB") can be ordered from Lewmar or authorized dealers. |
| Steering is stiff or difficult. | Issue with the boat's steering helm or cables, not the wheel itself. | Inspect the boat's steering system (helm pump, hydraulic lines, cables) for issues. Consult a marine technician. |
