5.3 Understanding Water Activity

Water activity (aw) is a measure of the unbound water in a food product. It is a critical factor in determining the shelf life and safety of food. A lower water activity generally indicates a longer shelf life and reduced risk of microbial spoilage. The WA-160A measures this value, typically ranging from 0 to 1.0 aw.

6.1 Cleaning the Device

  • Wipe the exterior of the meter with a soft, dry cloth.
  • For stubborn stains, a slightly damp cloth with mild detergent can be used, followed by a dry cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the plastic housing or display.
  • Ensure the sensor area and sample plates are kept clean and free of food residues. Use a soft brush or lint-free cloth for the sensor, being careful not to damage it.

6.2 Storage

  • When not in use, store the WA-160A meter in its original carrying case to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
