3.3 Initializing and Formatting Hard Drives
For new hard drives, or drives that are not recognized by your operating system, you will need to initialize and format them. This process varies slightly depending on your operating system.
Windows System:
- Right-click on the 'Start' button and select 'Disk Management'.
- Locate the unallocated disk(s) corresponding to your newly installed HDDs.
- Right-click on the unallocated space and select 'New Simple Volume'.
- Follow the on-screen wizard to assign a drive letter and format the disk (NTFS is recommended for Windows).
macOS System:
- Open 'Disk Utility' (found in Applications > Utilities).
- Select the uninitialized disk from the sidebar.
- Click 'Erase' and choose a format (e.g., APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled)).
- Provide a name for the volume and click 'Erase' to confirm.
Linux System:
- Open 'Disks' utility (often found in Utilities or System Tools).
- Select the unformatted disk from the left pane.
- Click the gear icon or 'Format Disk' option.
- Choose a file system (e.g., Ext4 for Linux, or NTFS for Windows compatibility) and click 'Format'.

4. Operating the Enclosure
4.1 Data Transfer
The ORICO 9558U3 supports USB 3.0, offering data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. This allows for quick and efficient transfer of large files. Once your drives are properly formatted and recognized by your system, they will appear as standard external drives, and you can drag and drop files as usual.

4.2 LED Indicators
Each drive bay has an individual LED indicator. These LEDs provide status information:
- Solid Blue: Drive is powered on and idle.
- Flashing Blue: Drive is actively reading or writing data.
4.3 Safety Lock Design
The enclosure features a safety lock design for each drive bay. This mechanism helps prevent accidental opening of the bays and ensures the drives remain securely in place during operation.

5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
To maintain optimal performance, periodically clean the exterior of the enclosure with a soft, dry cloth. Ensure the device is powered off and disconnected before cleaning. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents.
5.2 Heat Dissipation
The enclosure is equipped with an 80mm cooling fan and honeycomb holes for efficient heat dissipation. Ensure that the fan vents on the back of the unit are not obstructed to allow for proper airflow. Regular checks for dust buildup in the fan area are recommended.

5.3 Safe Removal
Always safely eject the hard drives from your operating system before disconnecting the enclosure or powering it off. This prevents data corruption and ensures drive longevity.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 Drive Not Recognized
- Check Connections: Ensure the USB data cable and power adapter are securely connected.
- Power On: Verify the enclosure is powered on (blue LEDs should be lit).
- Disk Management: For new drives, ensure they are initialized and formatted via your operating system's Disk Management (Windows), Disk Utility (macOS), or Disks (Linux) tool. Refer to Section 3.3.
- Try Another Port/Cable: Test with a different USB port or data cable to rule out cable or port issues.
- Individual Drive Test: If possible, test the hard drive in another enclosure or directly connect it to a computer to confirm the drive itself is functional.
6.2 Slow Transfer Speeds
- USB 3.0 Port: Ensure the enclosure is connected to a USB 3.0 port on your computer. Connecting to a USB 2.0 port will result in slower speeds.
- Cable Quality: Use the provided high-quality USB 3.0 cable.
- Drive Health: Check the health of your hard drives. Failing drives can cause performance degradation.
- System Load: High CPU or disk usage on your computer can affect transfer speeds.
6.3 Enclosure Goes to Sleep / Drives Unresponsive
Some users have reported issues with drives entering a sleep state and not waking up. This behavior can sometimes be related to operating system power management settings or specific drive firmware. Ensure your operating system's power settings for USB devices and hard drives are configured to prevent premature sleep or allow for quick wake-up. Check for any available firmware updates for the enclosure or your hard drives.
