1. Important Safeguards

When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons. Read all instructions carefully before operating the appliance.

  • Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
  • To protect against electrical shock, do not immerse cord, plugs, or the main unit in water or other liquid.
  • Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
  • Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts.
  • Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliance malfunctions or has been damaged in any manner.
  • The use of accessory attachments not recommended by the appliance manufacturer may cause injuries.
  • Do not use outdoors.
  • Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
  • Do not place on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven.
  • Extreme caution must be used when moving an appliance containing hot oil or other hot liquids.
  • Always attach plug to appliance first, then plug cord into the wall outlet. To disconnect, turn any control to “off”, then remove plug from wall outlet.
  • Do not use appliance for other than intended use.
  • This appliance is equipped with a Dry Boil Auto Cut-off Function to prevent damage if water level is too low.

Material Quality:

3. Setup

3.1 Before First Use:

  1. Unpack the appliance and all accessories. Remove any packaging materials.
  2. Wash the ceramic pots, steaming rack, and glass lid with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  3. Wipe the exterior of the main unit with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the main unit in water.

3.2 Placement and Water Filling:

  1. Place the main unit on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface, away from walls or other appliances to allow for proper ventilation.
  2. Fill the main unit's outer pot with water up to the indicated maximum level. This appliance uses water-insulated cooking technology, where heat from boiling water outside the inner pot evenly transfers heat to the food, retaining nutrients.
  3. Place the desired ceramic pot(s) or steaming rack into the main unit.
  4. Add ingredients to the ceramic pot(s).
  5. Cover with the glass lid.

4. Operating Instructions

The SONA SDB 1009 features a digital control panel for easy operation.

4.1 Digital Control Panel:

  • Function/ON/OFF: Press to turn the appliance on/off and to cycle through cooking programs.
  • Preset: Use to set a delayed start time.
  • +/-: Adjust cooking time or preset time.

4.2 Cooking Programs:

The appliance offers 5 pre-programmed cooking functions:

  • Soup: Ideal for preparing various soups and broths.
  • Steam: For steaming vegetables, fish, and other foods using the steaming rack.
  • Porridge: Specifically designed for cooking porridge to a perfect consistency.
  • Rice: For cooking rice.
  • Desserts: Suitable for preparing various steamed desserts.

4.3 General Operation:

  1. Ensure the appliance is properly set up with water in the outer pot and ingredients in the inner pot(s).
  2. Plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet (220-240V~ 50/60Hz).
  3. Press the Function/ON/OFF button to turn on the appliance.
  4. Press the Function/ON/OFF button repeatedly to select the desired cooking program. The indicator light for the selected program will illuminate.
  5. Use the +/- buttons to adjust the cooking time if needed.
  6. The appliance will automatically start cooking after a few seconds.
  7. Once cooking is complete, the appliance will automatically switch to the Keep Warm function.

4.4 Pre-set and Countdown Timer:

The pre-set timer allows you to delay the start of cooking, so your meal is ready when you need it.

  1. After selecting a cooking program, press the Preset button.
  2. Use the +/- buttons to set the desired delay time.
  3. The appliance will start cooking automatically after the preset time has elapsed.

4.5 Keep Warm Function:

After cooking is complete, the appliance automatically enters the Keep Warm mode to maintain the food's temperature until serving.

5. Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your appliance.

5.1 Cleaning the Ceramic Pots and Steaming Rack:

  1. Allow the pots and rack to cool completely after use.
  2. Wash with warm soapy water using a soft sponge or cloth.
  3. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storage.
  4. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or metal scouring pads, as these can damage the ceramic surface.

5.2 Cleaning the Main Unit:

  1. Ensure the appliance is unplugged and completely cool.
  2. Wipe the exterior of the main unit with a soft, damp cloth.
  3. Do not immerse the main unit in water or any other liquid.
  4. Clean any residue from the outer pot (water chamber) with a damp cloth.

5.3 Storage:

Store the appliance in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SONA SDB 1009, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Appliance does not turn on:
    • Check if the power cord is securely plugged into the wall outlet and the appliance.
    • Ensure the power outlet is functioning correctly by testing it with another appliance.
  • Food is not cooking or heating properly:
    • Verify that the outer pot has sufficient water. The Dry Boil Auto Cut-off function will prevent operation if water is too low.
    • Ensure the correct cooking program and time have been selected.
    • Check that the lid is properly sealed to retain heat and steam.
  • Steam is escaping excessively from the lid:
    • Ensure the lid is properly seated and not obstructed.
    • A small amount of steam release is normal through the steam vent.
