1. Introduction
Welcome to your new ANENG AN881B Digital Multimeter. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your device. Please read it thoroughly before operation and keep it for future reference.
2. Safety Information
Always adhere to safety precautions when using electrical testing equipment. Failure to do so may result in electric shock, injury, or damage to the meter or equipment under test.
- Do not exceed the maximum input values specified for each measurement range.
- Ensure the test leads are properly connected and the function switch is set to the correct range before making measurements.
- Exercise extreme caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Disconnect power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before testing resistance, continuity, diodes, or capacitance.
- Replace the battery when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
- Do not operate the multimeter if it appears damaged or if the test leads are damaged.
- Refer to local and national safety codes for proper electrical work practices.

4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The ANENG AN881B requires one 9V 6F22 battery (not included).
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the cover.
- Insert the 9V battery, observing the correct polarity (+ and -).
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
4.2 Connecting Test Leads
Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack for most voltage, resistance, and continuity measurements. For current measurements, refer to the specific instructions for "mA" or "10A" jacks in the operating instructions.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off
Rotate the central function dial from the "OFF" position to any desired measurement function to power on the device. Rotate it back to "OFF" to power off. The device features an "AUTO POWER OFF" function to conserve battery life.
5.2 Data Hold Function
Press the "HOLD" button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold and resume live readings.
5.3 Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection
The NCV function allows for detection of AC voltage without direct contact.
- Rotate the function dial to the "NCV" position.
- Bring the top of the multimeter near the conductor or outlet to be tested.
- If AC voltage is detected, the LED indicator will light up, and the buzzer may sound.

Figure 5.1: NCV Function in Use. This image shows a hand holding the ANENG AN881B Digital Multimeter near an electrical outlet, demonstrating the Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) detection function. The multimeter's display shows a reading, and text indicates that detected current will cause red lights to glow, signifying the presence of AC voltage.
6. Measurement Functions
6.1 DC Voltage Measurement (V DC)
- Set the function dial to the desired "V DC" range (e.g., 200mV, 2V, 20V, 200V, 1000V).
- Connect the red test lead to the positive (+) side of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative (-) side.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
6.2 AC Voltage Measurement (V AC)
- Set the function dial to the desired "V AC" range (e.g., 200mV, 2V, 20V, 200V, 750V).
- Connect the test leads across the circuit or component to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
6.3 DC Current Measurement (A DC)
- Set the function dial to the desired "A DC" range (e.g., 2mA, 20mA, 200mA, 20A).
- For measurements up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the "mA" jack. For measurements up to 20A, connect the red test lead to the "10A" jack. The black test lead remains in "COM".
- Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
6.4 AC Current Measurement (A AC)
- Set the function dial to the desired "A AC" range (e.g., 2mA, 20mA, 200mA, 20A).
- Follow the same test lead connection procedure as for DC Current Measurement.
- Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
6.5 Resistance Measurement (Ω)
- Set the function dial to the desired "Ω" range (e.g., 200Ω, 2kΩ, 20kΩ, 200kΩ, 2MΩ, 20MΩ, 200MΩ, 2000MΩ).
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
- Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
6.6 Continuity Test
- Set the function dial to the continuity/diode position (often indicated by a buzzer symbol).
- Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
- If the resistance is below a certain threshold (typically <50Ω), the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity.
6.7 Diode Test
- Set the function dial to the continuity/diode position.
- Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
- The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads; the display should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.
6.8 Capacitance Measurement (F)
- Set the function dial to the desired "F" range (e.g., 2nF, 20nF, 200nF, 2uF, 20uF, 200uF).
- Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before testing.
- Connect the test leads across the capacitor terminals.
- Read the capacitance value on the LCD display.
6.9 Temperature Measurement (°C/°F)
- Set the function dial to the "TEMP" position (often indicated by a thermometer symbol).
- Connect the temperature probe (thermocouple) to the appropriate input jacks (usually VΩHz and COM, or dedicated temperature jacks if present).
- Place the probe tip on or in the object whose temperature is to be measured.
- Read the temperature value on the LCD display.

Figure 6.1: Temperature Measurement. This image illustrates the ANENG AN881B Digital Multimeter performing a temperature measurement. A temperature probe is shown immersed in a glass of liquid, with its leads connected to the multimeter. The display shows a temperature reading, and accompanying text details the function: 'Test temperature of solution liquid or jelly with probe. Can change the temperature unit between °C. Temperature Range: -20~1000°C/-4~1832°F. Temperature Resolution: 1°C'.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
7.2 Battery Replacement
Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display to ensure accurate measurements. Refer to the "Battery Installation" section for instructions.
7.3 Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement.
- Ensure the multimeter is powered off and test leads are disconnected.
- Open the back cover (similar to battery replacement).
- Locate and replace the blown fuse with a fuse of the same type and rating (e.g., 200mA/250V for mA range, 10A/250V for 10A range).
- Securely close the back cover.
8. Troubleshooting
- No Display/Power: Check battery installation and charge. Replace battery if necessary.
- Incorrect Readings: Ensure test leads are correctly connected, the function dial is on the appropriate range, and the battery is not low.
- "OL" on Display: Indicates an over-range condition or an open circuit. Select a higher range or check for breaks in the circuit.
- No Current Measurement: Check the fuse. Replace if blown.
- NCV Not Working: Ensure the function dial is set to NCV and the area being tested has sufficient AC voltage.
