Arctic Cat 5.5" Handlebar Riser User Manual
Model: 8639-340
1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, use, and maintenance of your Arctic Cat 5.5" Handlebar Riser. This product is designed to increase handlebar height, providing a more comfortable and controlled riding position on compatible Arctic Cat snowmobiles. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and retain it for future reference.
The Arctic Cat 5.5" Handlebar Riser, Part Number 8639-340, is a direct replacement for Part Number 5639-882.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Improper installation or use of this product can lead to serious injury or death. Always follow all instructions carefully.
- Always wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection, during installation.
- Ensure the snowmobile is stable and turned off before beginning any installation or maintenance.
- Verify that all control cables, brake lines, and wiring have sufficient slack after riser installation. Insufficient slack can lead to loss of control.
- This riser is intended for use with Arctic Cat snowmobiles featuring a fixed steering post.
- For M models, risers larger than 5.5 inches (e.g., 7.5-inch and 8.5-inch) may require modifications to control cables and brake lines. This 5.5-inch riser generally does not require such modifications but always verify.
- If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified technician or Arctic Cat dealer.

4. Setup & Installation
Follow these steps to install your new handlebar riser. It is recommended to have a service manual for your specific snowmobile model for detailed torque specifications and procedures.
- Prepare the Snowmobile:
- Park the snowmobile on a flat, stable surface.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key.
- Ensure the handlebars are straight and secured.
- Remove Existing Handlebar Assembly:
- Carefully loosen and remove the bolts securing the top handlebar clamps. Keep track of all hardware.
- Gently lift the handlebars from the existing riser. You may need to support them to avoid stressing control cables and wiring.
- Loosen and remove the bolts securing the existing riser to the steering post. Remove the old riser.

- Install New Handlebar Riser:
- Place the new Arctic Cat 5.5" Handlebar Riser onto the steering post. Ensure it is correctly oriented.
- Insert the original bottom clamp bolts through the riser and into the steering post. Hand-tighten them initially.
- Torque these bolts to the manufacturer's specifications for your snowmobile model. Refer to your snowmobile's service manual.

- Reinstall Handlebars:
- Carefully place the handlebars onto the new riser, ensuring they are centered and properly seated in the bottom clamps.
- Place the top handlebar clamps over the handlebars and align them with the riser's mounting holes.
- Insert and hand-tighten the top clamp bolts.
- Torque these bolts to the manufacturer's specifications, typically in a cross-pattern to ensure even clamping pressure.

- Check Cable and Line Slack:
- Turn the handlebars fully from left to right.
- Observe all control cables (throttle, brake, etc.) and brake lines. Ensure they have sufficient slack throughout the full range of motion and are not stretched, pinched, or binding.
- If any cables or lines are tight, stretched, or binding, DO NOT OPERATE THE SNOWMOBILE. You may need to re-route them or install longer cables/lines. Consult a qualified technician.

5. Post-Installation Checks
After installation, perform the following checks before operating the snowmobile:
- Handlebar Security: Attempt to move the handlebars. They should be firmly secured and not exhibit any play or rotation.
- Control Function: Verify that the throttle, brake, and all other handlebar-mounted controls operate smoothly and without obstruction through their full range of motion.
- Cable/Line Clearance: Re-check all cables, wires, and brake lines for proper routing and clearance. Ensure they do not rub against any moving parts or sharp edges.
- Test Ride: Conduct a slow, controlled test ride in a safe area to confirm proper steering and control response before full operation.
6. Maintenance
The Arctic Cat 5.5" Handlebar Riser is constructed from durable extruded aluminum with a black powder-coat finish, requiring minimal maintenance.
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the riser and its mounting hardware for any signs of looseness, damage, or corrosion.
- Cleaning: Clean the riser with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the powder-coat finish.
- Torque Check: It is advisable to re-check the torque of all mounting bolts after the first few hours of operation and periodically thereafter, especially after rough riding conditions.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Handlebars feel loose after installation. | Mounting bolts are not sufficiently torqued. | Re-torque all handlebar clamp and riser mounting bolts to manufacturer specifications. |
| Control cables/brake lines are tight or binding. | Insufficient slack due to increased handlebar height. | Re-route cables/lines for more slack. If still tight, longer cables/lines may be required. Do not operate until resolved. |
| Riser does not fit steering post. | Incorrect riser model or incompatible snowmobile. | Verify the riser part number (8639-340) and ensure your snowmobile has a fixed steering post and is listed in the compatibility section. |
