1. Introduction
The Klein Tools VDV500-820 Wire Tracer Tone Generator and Probe Kit is designed for professionals to efficiently trace and identify wires in various common wiring systems. This kit includes a Toner-Pro (tone generator) and a Probe-Pro (tracing probe), enabling accurate tracing of open-ended, non-energized wiring. It is suitable for use with Ethernet, telephone, speaker, coax, video, and data cables, supporting RJ45, RJ11, and RJ12 connections.
The Toner-Pro features five distinct tone cadences and can transmit signals over 1,000 feet. It also performs continuity and polarity testing, indicated by clear LED displays. The Probe-Pro is equipped with a responsive, durable, non-metallic, replaceable conductive tip and includes a 3.5 mm headphone jack for use in noisy environments.

- The battery door must be in place and secure before you operate the device.
3. Product Components and Features
3.1 Toner-Pro (Tone Generator)
The Toner-Pro is the signal-generating unit. It is used to inject a tone onto a cable, which can then be detected by the Probe-Pro. Key features include:
- Five Distinct Tone Cadences: Allows for differentiation when tracing multiple cables.
- Continuity and Polarity Testing: LEDs clearly indicate normal (NRM), reverse (REV) polarity, and continuity (Pass/Short).
- Multiple Connection Options: Equipped with an RJ11 plug for telephone jacks, an RJ45 plug for data jacks, and rugged Angled Bed of Nails (ABN) clips for secure attachment to bare wires.
- Power Button: For turning the unit on and off.
- Test Tone Button: Activates the tone generation.
- Tone Mode Selection Buttons: For cycling through the available tone frequencies (800Hz, 1000Hz, 1500Hz).

3.2 Probe-Pro (Tracing Probe)
The Probe-Pro is the receiving unit used to detect the tone signal emitted by the Toner-Pro. Key features include:
- Responsive Conductive Tip: Durable, non-metallic, and replaceable (VDV999-068, sold separately) for precise tracing.
- Adjustable Volume Speaker: Amplifies the detected tone for clear audibility.
- 3.5 mm Headphone Jack: Allows for headphone use (sold separately) in noisy environments, ensuring clear audio feedback.
- LED Indicators: For signal strength and flashlight.
- Power Button: For turning the unit on and off.
- Volume Control Buttons: To adjust the speaker volume.
- Flashlight Button: Activates the built-in flashlight for working in dark areas.

4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
Both the Toner-Pro and Probe-Pro require batteries for operation. Ensure the units are powered off before installing or replacing batteries.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of each unit.
- Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert the required AAA batteries (8 total, 4 per unit) according to the polarity markings inside the compartment.
- Securely close the battery compartment cover.
Note: It is recommended to use fresh, high-quality batteries. Some users have reported issues with included batteries leaking; inspect batteries regularly.
4.2 Connecting the Toner-Pro to Cables
Before connecting, ensure the circuit is NOT energized. The VDV500-820 is designed for use on non-energized wiring.
- For RJ11/RJ45 Jacks: Plug the appropriate connector directly into the telephone or data jack.
- For Bare Wires: Use the Angled Bed of Nails (ABN) clips. Connect one clip to the wire you wish to trace and the other clip to a known ground or another wire in the pair. Ensure a secure connection.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off
- Press and hold the power button on both the Toner-Pro and Probe-Pro to turn them on or off.
- The units will typically emit a short beep or illuminate an LED to indicate they are powered on.
5.2 Tone Generation and Selection (Toner-Pro)
- Ensure the Toner-Pro is connected to the cable you wish to trace.
- Press the 'TEST TONE' button to start emitting a tone.
- Use the 'Select Tone' buttons (up/down arrows) to cycle through the five distinct tone cadences (800Hz, 1000Hz, 1500Hz, etc.). Select a tone that is easily distinguishable.
5.3 Tracing Wires (Probe-Pro)
- With the Toner-Pro emitting a tone, power on the Probe-Pro.
- Adjust the volume on the Probe-Pro to a comfortable level using the volume control buttons.
- Move the tip of the Probe-Pro along the suspected path of the cable. The tone will be loudest when the probe is directly over the toned wire.
- The signal strength indicator on the Probe-Pro will also help in identifying the wire.
- For precise identification, especially in bundles, use the non-metallic tip to isolate individual wires.
- In noisy environments, plug headphones (3.5 mm jack) into the Probe-Pro for clearer audio detection.
5.4 Continuity and Polarity Testing (Toner-Pro)
The Toner-Pro can also test for continuity and polarity of cables.
- Connect the Toner-Pro to the cable using the RJ11, RJ45, or alligator clips.
- The LEDs under 'TEST MODE' will illuminate to indicate the status:
- POLARITY: NRM (Normal) or REV (Reverse) for telephone lines.
- CONT (Continuity): Pass (continuous circuit) or Short (short circuit).
- Interpret the LED indicators to diagnose cable issues.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 4.1 for detailed instructions on battery replacement. Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears or if performance degrades.
6.2 Probe Tip Replacement
The Probe-Pro features a replaceable conductive tip (Klein Tools part number VDV999-068, sold separately). If the tip becomes worn or damaged, it can be replaced to maintain optimal performance.
- Ensure the Probe-Pro is powered off.
- Carefully unscrew or detach the worn tip from the probe.
- Attach the new VDV999-068 replacement tip, ensuring it is securely fastened.
6.3 Cleaning
Clean the units with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the device openings.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Tone Detected:
- Ensure both Toner-Pro and Probe-Pro are powered on.
- Verify batteries are fresh and correctly installed in both units. Replace if necessary.
- Check that the Toner-Pro is securely connected to the cable.
- Confirm the 'TEST TONE' button on the Toner-Pro has been pressed.
- Increase the volume on the Probe-Pro.
- Weak or Intermittent Signal:
- Ensure the cable is not energized. This device is for non-energized circuits only.
- Check for strong electromagnetic interference from nearby electrical equipment or radio frequencies. Move away from such sources if possible.
- Verify the connection of the Toner-Pro to the cable is solid.
- Consider replacing the Probe-Pro tip if it appears worn.
- Ensure the cable length is within the device's effective range (over 1,000 feet).
- Incorrect Continuity/Polarity Readings:
- Ensure the Toner-Pro is properly connected to the cable.
- Verify the cable itself is not damaged or miswired.
