2. Setup

2.1 Attaching to a Tripod or Support

The Nitrotech 612 features a flat base, allowing it to be mounted on various supports such as tripods, sliders, or jibs. Ensure the support is stable and capable of handling the combined weight of the video head and your camera setup.

  1. Align the flat base of the video head with the mounting plate of your chosen support.
  2. Securely fasten the video head to the support using the appropriate mounting screw (typically 3/8" or 1/4" with an adapter). Tighten firmly to prevent any movement during operation.

2.2 Mounting Your Camera

The Nitrotech 612 utilizes a side lock sliding plate attachment for quick and secure camera mounting.

  1. Attach the sliding plate to the bottom of your camera. Ensure the screw is tightly secured to prevent rotation.
  2. Locate the side lock lever on the video head. Pull the lever to unlock the plate receiver.
  3. Slide the camera with the attached plate into the receiver from the side until it clicks into place.
  4. Push the side lock lever back to its locked position to ensure the camera is firmly secured. Always double-check that the camera is locked before releasing your grip.

3. Operating

3.1 Continuous Counterbalance System

The Nitrotech 612 features a continuous counterbalance system that allows for precise balancing of camera setups ranging from 4 kg to 18 kg (at a 55 mm center of gravity). This system ensures constant control regardless of the tilt angle, preventing accidental camera drops and enabling smooth, stable tilting movements.

  • Adjust the counterbalance knob (labeled 'COUNTER BALANCE SYSTEM') to match the weight and center of gravity of your camera setup. Turn the knob clockwise to increase counterbalance force and counter-clockwise to decrease it.
  • The goal is to achieve a state where the camera remains at any tilt angle without assistance, indicating perfect balance.

3.2 Variable Continuous Fluid Drag System

The fluid drag system provides smooth and judder-free pan and tilt movements, essential for professional video capture. The variable continuous adjustment allows you to fine-tune the drag resistance to your preference and the specific shot requirements.

  • Adjust the fluid drag knob (labeled 'FLUID DRAG SYSTEM') for both pan and tilt axes. Turn the knob clockwise to increase drag resistance for slower, more controlled movements, and counter-clockwise to decrease drag for faster, freer movements.
  • Experiment with different settings to find the ideal resistance for your shooting style and camera movements.

3.3 Pan and Tilt Locks

Independent pan and tilt locks allow you to fix the head's position when static shots are required or during transport.

  • To lock the pan movement, tighten the pan lock knob located at the base of the head.
  • To lock the tilt movement, tighten the tilt lock knob, typically located on the side of the head.
  • Always unlock these controls before attempting to pan or tilt the head to avoid damage.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Manfrotto Nitrotech Fluid Video Head 612.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the head after each use. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no moisture enters the internal mechanisms. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: Store the video head in a clean, dry environment, preferably in a padded bag or case to protect it from dust, moisture, and impacts.
  • Lubrication: The fluid mechanisms are factory-sealed and do not require user lubrication. Attempting to lubricate internal components may void your warranty and damage the head.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all knobs, levers, and screws for tightness. Ensure the quick release plate mechanism operates smoothly and securely.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your video head.

  • Camera not securing to plate: Ensure the quick release plate is correctly attached to the camera and that the side lock lever on the head is fully engaged after inserting the plate. Check for any obstructions in the plate receiver.
  • Stiff pan/tilt movements: Verify that the pan and tilt lock knobs are fully disengaged. If movements remain stiff, adjust the fluid drag system to a lower setting. Extreme temperatures can also affect fluid performance; allow the head to acclimate to ambient temperature.
  • Camera not balancing: Adjust the continuous counterbalance system. Ensure your camera setup's weight is within the head's payload capacity (4-18 kg). Slide the camera plate forward or backward to find the optimal center of gravity.
  • Unusual noises: If you hear grinding or unusual noises, cease operation immediately. Do not attempt to disassemble the head. Contact Manfrotto customer support for assistance.
