Setup and Installation
Installation of the Kia Telluride Tow Hitch requires mechanical aptitude and basic tools. If you are not comfortable performing this installation, it is recommended to seek professional assistance.
Required Tools (Not Included):
- Socket Wrench Set
- Torque Wrench
- Vehicle Lift or Jack Stands
- Safety Glasses
- Gloves
Installation Steps:
- Prepare Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. If necessary, lift the vehicle using a hoist or jack stands to provide adequate working clearance underneath.
- Locate Mounting Points: Identify the factory mounting points on the vehicle's frame. These are typically pre-drilled holes designed for tow hitch installation.
- Position Tow Hitch: Carefully lift the tow hitch assembly into position, aligning the mounting holes on the hitch with the factory mounting points on the vehicle frame. It may be helpful to have an assistant for this step.
- Secure with Hardware: Insert the appropriate bolts, washers, and nuts from the hardware kit through the aligned holes. Refer to the "Hardware Overview" in Figure 1 for specific hardware identification. Hand-tighten all fasteners initially.
- Torque Fasteners: Using a torque wrench, tighten all bolts to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque settings. Consult your vehicle's service manual for exact torque values. Ensure all connections are secure.
- Install Wiring Harness (if applicable): If your vehicle requires a wiring harness for trailer lights, follow the separate instructions provided with the harness. The 4-Flat Connector Bracket Set can be used to secure the trailer light connector.
- Install Ball Mount and Receiver Plug: Insert the ball mount into the receiver tube and secure it with the hitch pin. Install the receiver plug into the receiver tube when the ball mount is not in use to protect it from dirt and debris.
- Final Inspection: Double-check all connections and ensure the tow hitch is securely mounted and all hardware is properly tightened.

Operating the Tow Hitch
Once installed, the tow hitch is ready for use with compatible trailers and accessories.
- Connecting a Trailer: Insert the trailer's coupler onto the ball mount. Ensure the coupler is fully seated and locked into place. Attach safety chains from the trailer to the designated loops on the tow hitch. Connect the trailer's electrical plug to the vehicle's wiring harness.
- Weight Distribution: Always ensure proper weight distribution when loading a trailer. Refer to your trailer and vehicle owner's manuals for guidelines on tongue weight and gross trailer weight.
- Driving with a Trailer: Drive cautiously, allowing for increased stopping distances and wider turns. Be aware of speed limits for towing.
- Disconnecting a Trailer: Park on a level surface, engage the parking brake. Disconnect the electrical plug and safety chains. Release the coupler from the ball mount.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your tow hitch.
- Inspection: Before each towing trip, inspect the tow hitch, ball mount, hitch pin, and all fasteners for signs of wear, damage, cracks, or corrosion.
- Cleaning: Clean the tow hitch periodically to remove dirt, salt, and road grime. A mild soap and water solution is usually sufficient.
- Lubrication: Apply a thin layer of grease to the hitch ball to reduce friction and wear between the ball and the trailer coupler.
- Storage: When not in use, consider removing the ball mount and storing it in a dry place. Keep the receiver plug installed to protect the receiver tube.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter.
- Loose Connections: If you notice any rattling or movement, re-check all fasteners and ensure they are tightened to the correct torque specifications.
- Corrosion: Rust or corrosion can occur, especially in harsh environments. Clean affected areas and apply a rust-inhibiting primer and paint if necessary.
- Trailer Light Malfunction: If trailer lights are not working, check the vehicle's wiring harness connection, trailer's wiring, and fuses in both the vehicle and trailer.
- Difficulty Inserting Ball Mount: Ensure the receiver tube is clean and free of debris. A small amount of lubricant can help.
