Setup

1. Connecting the MXR M287 Pedal:

  1. Ensure your amplifier is turned off or its volume is set to minimum.
  2. Connect your bass guitar to the INPUT jack of the M287 pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  3. Connect the OUTPUT jack of the M287 pedal to your amplifier's input (or the input of your next effects pedal in the signal chain) using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  4. Connect a 9-volt DC, center-negative power adapter (not included) to the POWER jack on the rear of the pedal.
  5. Once all connections are made, you can turn on your amplifier and adjust its volume.

2. Installing Dunlop Nickel Wound Bass Strings:

The included Dunlop DBN45105 Nickel Wound Bass Strings are designed for 4-string basses with a long scale. Follow your bass guitar manufacturer's instructions for string installation. General steps include:

  1. Remove old strings one at a time to maintain neck tension.
  2. Thread the new string through the bridge and into the tuning machine post.
  3. Wind the string neatly around the post, ensuring sufficient wraps for tuning stability.
  4. Stretch the strings gently and tune to pitch. Repeat for all strings.
  5. Allow time for the strings to settle and re-tune as necessary.

3. Using MXR Patch Cables:

The included MXR 6-inch patch cables are designed for connecting effects pedals on a pedalboard. Their flat, low-profile right-angle ends help optimize space. Connect one end of a patch cable to the output of one pedal and the other end to the input of the next pedal in your signal chain.

Operation

The MXR M287 Sub Octave Bass Fuzz pedal allows for extensive tone shaping. Experiment with the controls to find your desired sound.

Basic Operation:

  1. Engage the fuzz effect by pressing the FUZZ Footswitch. The corresponding LED will illuminate.
  2. Engage the sub octave effect by pressing the OCTAVE Footswitch. The corresponding LED will illuminate.
  3. Adjust the GAIN knob to control the intensity of the fuzz. Higher settings result in more distortion.
  4. Use the FUZZ, OCTAVE, and DRY knobs to blend the three distinct signals (fuzz, sub octave, and clean bass) to your preference. This allows you to maintain your instrument's natural sound while adding effects.
  5. Utilize the BASS and TREBLE buttons to shape the tonal characteristics of the fuzz signal. These act as boosts for their respective frequencies.
  6. The MID+LEVEL knob allows you to boost the midrange of your dry signal, helping your bass cut through a dense mix without affecting the fuzz or octave tones.

Fuzz Voice Selection:

The M287 features an internal switch to select between two distinct fuzz voices:

  • Warm and Compressed: Provides a smoother, more vintage-style fuzz.
  • Bright and Aggressive: Offers a more modern, cutting fuzz tone.

To change this setting, the pedal enclosure must be opened. It is recommended that this be done by a qualified technician to avoid damage and maintain warranty. Refer to the official MXR website or support for detailed instructions if you intend to adjust this setting yourself.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the pedal with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Disconnect all cables when storing for extended periods.
  • String Care: Regularly wipe down your bass strings after playing to remove oils and dirt, which can extend their lifespan.
