This image displays two individual retail packages of Tektro P20.11 Disc Brake Pads. Each package contains one set of brake pads, featuring a red backing plate and a beige metal ceramic compound pad. The packaging is black with yellow accents, clearly showing the 'TEKTRO' brand logo and indicating compatibility with 'Orion Auriga Pro' brake systems.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation of disc brake pads is crucial for safety and optimal performance. If you are unsure about any step, it is recommended to seek assistance from a qualified bicycle mechanic.

Tools Required:

  • Hex wrenches (sizes may vary depending on your brake caliper)
  • Flathead screwdriver (for some retention pins)
  • Piston press tool or tire lever (to push pistons back)
  • Clean rags
  • Isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning rotors)

Installation Steps:

  1. Remove Wheel: Carefully remove the wheel from the bicycle.
  2. Remove Old Pads: Depending on your caliper model, remove the pad retention pin (often a bolt or cotter pin) and slide out the old brake pads. Note the orientation of the spring clip.
  3. Clean Caliper: Use a clean rag to wipe away any dust or debris from inside the brake caliper. Avoid using harsh chemicals.
  4. Reset Pistons: Gently push the brake caliper pistons back into their bores using a piston press tool or a clean tire lever. Ensure they are fully retracted to make space for the new, thicker pads.
  5. Install New Pads: Insert the new Tektro P20.11 brake pads along with the spring clip into the caliper, ensuring they are correctly seated. The spring clip helps keep the pads separated and centered.
  6. Secure Pads: Reinstall the pad retention pin and secure it.
  7. Reinstall Wheel: Reinstall the wheel, ensuring it is properly seated in the dropouts and the quick release or thru-axle is tightened securely.
  8. Check Brake Lever: Squeeze the brake lever several times until the pads contact the rotor and the lever feels firm.
  9. Align Caliper (if necessary): If the rotor rubs, loosen the caliper mounting bolts slightly, squeeze the brake lever firmly, and retighten the bolts while holding the lever. This helps center the caliper over the rotor.

Operating and Bedding-In

New brake pads require a "bedding-in" process to achieve optimal performance and longevity. This process transfers a thin layer of pad material onto the rotor, improving friction and reducing noise.

Bedding-In Procedure:

  1. Find a safe, open area with no traffic.
  2. Accelerate to a moderate speed (e.g., 15-20 mph or 25-30 km/h).
  3. Apply the brakes firmly and consistently, but without locking the wheels, until you slow down to walking speed. Do not come to a complete stop.
  4. Release the brakes and allow them to cool for a few seconds.
  5. Repeat this process approximately 20-30 times. You should notice the braking power increasing and becoming more consistent.
  6. After the bedding-in process, the pads are ready for normal use.

Note: Avoid hard braking or prolonged dragging of the brakes immediately after installation, as this can glaze the pads and reduce performance.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your Tektro P20.11 disc brake pads.

Inspection:

  • Pad Wear: Regularly inspect the thickness of the brake pad material. Replace pads when the friction material is worn down to approximately 0.5mm or less, or if the wear indicator groove is no longer visible.
  • Contamination: Check pads and rotors for oil, grease, or other contaminants. Contaminated pads should be replaced, and rotors cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Rotor Condition: Inspect rotors for excessive wear, warping, or deep grooves.

Cleaning:

  • Keep brake calipers and rotors clean. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away dust and debris.
  • For rotors, use isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue that might affect braking performance.
  • Avoid spraying lubricants or cleaning agents directly onto brake pads or rotors.

Replacement:

Replace brake pads as soon as they show significant wear or if braking performance deteriorates despite proper bedding-in and cleaning. Always replace both pads in a caliper simultaneously.

Troubleshooting

Common issues with disc brake pads and their potential solutions:

  • Squealing Brakes:
    • Cause: Contaminated pads/rotors, improper bedding-in, loose caliper, worn pads.
    • Solution: Clean rotors with isopropyl alcohol. Re-bed pads. Check caliper alignment and tightness. Replace worn pads.
  • Reduced Braking Performance:
    • Cause: Contaminated pads, worn pads, air in hydraulic system (for hydraulic brakes), glazed pads.
    • Solution: Replace contaminated/worn pads. Re-bed glazed pads. If hydraulic, consider bleeding the brake system (professional service recommended).
  • Brake Rubbing:
    • Cause: Misaligned caliper, bent rotor, sticky pistons.
    • Solution: Realign caliper. Inspect and true/replace bent rotor. Clean and lubricate pistons (professional service recommended for sticky pistons).
