4. Setup and Installation

Installation of a carburetor requires mechanical aptitude. If you are unsure about any steps, it is recommended to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic.

4.1. Safety Precautions

  • Ensure the engine is cool before beginning work.
  • Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby when working with fuel.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection.

4.2. Installation Steps

  1. Drain Fuel: Turn off the fuel supply and drain any fuel from the old carburetor and fuel line into an approved container.
  2. Remove Air Filter: Detach the air filter assembly to gain access to the carburetor.
  3. Disconnect Fuel Line: Carefully disconnect the fuel line from the old carburetor. Be prepared for residual fuel leakage.
  4. Disconnect Throttle Cable: Loosen the throttle cable retainer and carefully remove the throttle cable from the carburetor slide.
  5. Remove Old Carburetor: Unbolt the old carburetor from the engine intake manifold. Note the orientation of any gaskets.
  6. Install New Carburetor: Place new gaskets (if required and not pre-installed) and mount the AlveyTech 90cc Carburetor to the engine intake manifold. Ensure a tight, leak-free seal.
  7. Connect Throttle Cable: Reattach the throttle cable to the new carburetor slide and adjust for proper tension and free movement.
  8. Connect Fuel Line: Securely attach the fuel line to the carburetor's fuel inlet. Ensure the fuel shutoff valve is accessible.
  9. Reinstall Air Filter: Reattach the air filter assembly.
  10. Refill Fuel: Turn on the fuel supply and check for any leaks.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Choke Operation

The carburetor features a manual choke located on the right side. The choke enriches the fuel-air mixture for easier cold starting.

  • Cold Start: Move the choke lever to the 'ON' (closed) position.
  • Warm-up: Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the 'OFF' (open) position as the engine warms up. Operating with the choke on for too long can lead to rough running and fouled spark plugs.
  • Warm Engine Start: The choke is typically not required for starting a warm engine.

5.2. Idle Adjustment

The idle speed screw (typically a larger screw with a spring) controls the engine's idle RPM. Turn clockwise to increase idle speed, counter-clockwise to decrease. Adjust only when the engine is warm.

5.3. Air/Fuel Mixture Adjustment

The air/fuel mixture screw (smaller screw, often recessed) fine-tunes the fuel mixture at idle. Adjusting this screw can impact engine performance and fuel efficiency. Small adjustments (quarter turns) are recommended, followed by testing. Consult a service manual for your specific dirt bike model for optimal settings.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your carburetor.

  • Fuel Quality: Always use fresh, clean fuel. Ethanol in gasoline can degrade carburetor components over time. Consider using ethanol-free fuel or a fuel stabilizer if the vehicle is stored for extended periods.
  • Fuel Filter: Ensure your fuel system has a clean, functional fuel filter to prevent debris from entering the carburetor.
  • Air Filter: A clean air filter is crucial for proper air-fuel mixture. Clean or replace the air filter regularly according to your dirt bike's service schedule.
  • Carburetor Cleaning: If the carburetor becomes clogged or dirty, it may require cleaning. This typically involves disassembling the carburetor, cleaning jets and passages with carburetor cleaner, and replacing gaskets if necessary. This procedure should only be performed by individuals with appropriate mechanical experience.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues related to carburetor function. For complex problems, consult a professional mechanic.

7.1. Engine Not Starting or Hard Starting

  • Check Fuel Supply: Ensure there is fuel in the tank and the fuel shutoff valve is open.
  • Choke Position: Verify the choke is in the correct position for starting (ON for cold, OFF for warm).
  • Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug for fouling or damage.
  • Fuel Flow: Check for blockages in the fuel line or fuel filter.
  • Carburetor Clogging: Internal passages or jets may be clogged, requiring cleaning.

7.2. Poor Engine Performance (Rough Idle, Stalling, Lack of Power)

  • Idle Adjustment: Adjust the idle speed screw.
  • Air/Fuel Mixture: Adjust the air/fuel mixture screw in small increments.
  • Air Filter: A dirty air filter can restrict airflow. Clean or replace it.
  • Vacuum Leaks: Check for leaks around the carburetor mounting gaskets or intake manifold.
  • Fuel Contamination: Old or contaminated fuel can cause performance issues.

7.3. Fuel Leaks

  • Fuel Lines: Inspect fuel lines for cracks or loose connections.
  • Float Bowl Gasket: A damaged or improperly seated float bowl gasket can cause leaks.
  • Float Level: An incorrect float level can cause fuel to overflow. This requires internal carburetor adjustment.
