Setup

1. Battery Installation

The Greenworks GD40CS15 is sold as a tool-only unit. A 40V Greenworks battery (2Ah or 4Ah) and charger are required and sold separately. Ensure the battery is fully charged before use.

  1. Align the battery pack with the battery port on the chainsaw.
  2. Slide the battery pack into the port until it clicks securely into place.
  3. To remove, press the battery release button and slide the battery out.

2. Filling the Chain Oil Reservoir

The chainsaw features an automatic oiling system. It is crucial to fill the oil reservoir before each use to ensure proper lubrication of the bar and chain.

  1. Place the chainsaw on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Unscrew the oil cap located on the top of the chainsaw.
  3. Carefully pour high-quality bar and chain oil into the reservoir until it reaches the maximum fill line. The reservoir volume is 180ml.
  4. Replace the oil cap securely.
  5. Regularly check the oil level using the transparent oil fill window during operation.

3. Chain Tensioning

Proper chain tension is essential for safe and efficient cutting. The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still able to be pulled around by hand.

  1. Ensure the battery is removed before adjusting chain tension.
  2. Loosen the two nuts securing the side cover (as shown in Figure 6).
  3. Turn the tensioning screw (typically located near the guide bar) clockwise to increase tension or counter-clockwise to decrease tension.
  4. Once the desired tension is achieved, tighten the two nuts on the side cover securely.
  5. Check the chain tension again after the first few cuts, as new chains can stretch.

Operating Instructions

1. Pre-Operation Checklist

  • Ensure battery is fully charged and securely installed.
  • Check chain oil level and refill if necessary.
  • Verify chain tension is correct.
  • Inspect the chainsaw for any loose parts or damage.
  • Confirm the work area is clear of obstructions and bystanders.
  • Wear all recommended PPE.

2. Starting and Stopping the Chainsaw

The Greenworks GD40CS15 features an easy-starting system with two-button operation for safety.

  1. To Start:
    • Engage the chain brake (push forward).
    • Press and hold the safety lock-out button.
    • While holding the safety lock-out button, squeeze the trigger switch.
    • Release the safety lock-out button once the motor starts.

3. Cutting Techniques

Always use proper cutting techniques to ensure safety and efficiency.

  • Felling Small Trees: Plan your escape path. Make a notch cut on the side of the tree in the direction of the fall, then make a felling cut from the opposite side, slightly above the notch.
  • Limbing: Remove branches from a fallen tree. Work from the base of the tree towards the top, cutting smaller branches first. Be aware of branches under tension.
  • Bucking: Cutting a fallen log into sections. Support the log to prevent pinching the guide bar. If cutting from above, cut about one-third of the way through, then roll the log and finish the cut from the other side.
  • Avoid Kickback: Never cut with the tip of the guide bar. Always maintain a firm grip with both hands.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your chainsaw. Always remove the battery pack before performing any maintenance.

1. Chain Lubrication

The automatic oiler system requires regular monitoring. Check the oil level frequently via the transparent window and refill as needed. Use only recommended bar and chain oil.

2. Chain Sharpening and Replacement

  • A dull chain will reduce cutting efficiency and increase kickback risk. Sharpen the chain regularly or replace it when necessary.
  • Refer to the chain manufacturer's instructions for proper sharpening angles and file sizes.
  • When replacing the chain, ensure it is the correct size (35 cm Oregon steel chain) and installed with the cutting edges facing the correct direction.

3. Cleaning

  • After each use, clean wood chips, sawdust, and debris from the guide bar, chain, and motor housing.
  • Use a brush or compressed air. Do not use water to clean the electrical components.

4. Storage

  • Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children.
  • Ensure the chain brake is engaged and the battery is removed before storage.
  • Empty the chain oil reservoir if storing for extended periods.
