3. Setup and Installation

Setting up your PetSafe In-Ground Pet Fence is a DIY project that can typically be completed over a weekend. Careful planning is crucial for optimal performance.

3.1 Planning Your Layout

Before burying any wire, plan the exact boundary you wish to create. Consider areas you want your pet to access (e.g., backyard, front yard) and areas to avoid (e.g., gardens, pools). The system allows for various configurations:

  • Backyard Only
  • Front Yard Only
  • Customized around Off-Limit Spaces
  • Integrated with an Existing Physical Fence

3.2 Burying the Wire

Once your layout is planned, carefully bury the boundary wire approximately 1-3 inches deep along the chosen perimeter. Ensure the wire forms a continuous loop back to the transmitter. For areas where the wire crosses a driveway or sidewalk, you may need to create a shallow groove or run the wire through a PVC pipe for protection.

3.3 Transmitter Placement

The transmitter should be installed indoors in a dry, protected area, close to a standard electrical outlet. Connect the ends of the boundary wire to the transmitter's terminals. Plug in the power adapter and ensure the "Power" and "Loop" indicator lights are green, indicating a complete circuit.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Collar Activation and Settings

Insert the RFA-67 battery into the UltraLight receiver collar. The collar features a tone-only training mode and four levels of static correction. Adjust the correction level based on your pet's temperament and response during training. The collar is designed for pets 8 lbs and up with neck sizes 6-26 inches.

The system supports an unlimited number of collars, allowing multiple pets to use the same fence system. Each collar's settings can be customized individually.

4.2 Boundary Width Control

The transmitter has a "Boundary Width Control" knob (typically 1-10) to adjust the distance from the wire where the collar will activate. Start with a wider setting during initial training and gradually reduce it as your pet learns the boundary.

Use the included test light tool to walk the boundary and verify the warning and static correction zones. The test light will flash when the collar enters the warning zone and then the static correction zone.

5. Maintenance

  • Battery Replacement: The UltraLight receiver collars use PetSafe RFA-67 batteries. Replace batteries as needed, typically when the collar's indicator light flashes red or the collar stops functioning.
  • Wire Inspection: Periodically inspect the boundary wire for any damage, especially after heavy rain, landscaping, or ground disturbances. Use the test light tool to identify any breaks in the wire loop.
  • Collar Care: Keep the receiver collar clean and dry. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or extreme temperatures. Regularly check the contact points for corrosion and ensure they are securely attached.

6. Troubleshooting

If your PetSafe In-Ground Pet Fence system is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues:

  • No Signal/No Correction:
    • Check if the transmitter's "Power" and "Loop" lights are green. If not, ensure the power adapter is securely plugged in and the wire loop is intact.
    • Verify the collar battery is fresh and correctly installed. Use the test light tool to confirm the collar is receiving a signal.
    • Inspect the boundary wire for breaks. A break in the wire will cause the "Loop" light on the transmitter to turn off or flash.
  • Inconsistent Correction:
    • Ensure the contact points on the collar are making proper contact with your pet's skin. Adjust the contact points length if necessary.
    • Check the boundary width control setting on the transmitter. It might be set too low.
    • Environmental interference from large metal objects or electrical lines can sometimes affect the signal.
  • Pet Not Responding to Correction:
    • Increase the static correction level on the collar.
    • Re-evaluate your pet's training. Consistent and positive reinforcement training is key.
