2.2 Powering On and Initial Configuration
The device typically powers on when connected to a vehicle's OBD2 port. Alternatively, it can be powered via the USB cable connected to a computer.
Follow the on-screen prompts for initial language selection and basic settings.
2.3 Software Updates
It is highly recommended to update the device software immediately after purchase to ensure access to the latest vehicle coverage and functions. Connect the device to a computer using the mini USB cable and follow the update instructions provided in the full user manual or on the Autel website. A Windows PC is required for the update process.
3. Operation
3.1 Connecting to a Vehicle
- Locate the vehicle's 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC), usually under the dashboard on the driver's side.
- Plug the OBD2 connection cable into the vehicle's DLC.
- Connect the other end of the cable to the MD806 PRO unit. The unit will power on automatically.
3.2 Auto Scan Function
The Auto Scan function allows the tool to automatically identify the vehicle and perform a comprehensive scan of all available systems. This feature is particularly useful for quickly identifying fault codes across various modules.

Figure 3: The Auto Scan screen showing detected modules and their status (e.g., ABS, EPS, TCM).
Note: The AutoVIN function, which automatically identifies the vehicle, typically works for vehicles manufactured after 2006, depending on whether the vehicle's VIN is stored in the ECU. Manual input/selection is always an option.
3.3 Full Systems Diagnostics
The MD806 PRO can access and diagnose all available vehicle systems, including but not limited to:
- Engine System
- Transmission System
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
- Steering System
- Electrical Park Brake System (EPB)
- Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)
- Battery Management System (BMS)
- Air Conditioning System
- Chassis System
- Powertrain
Within these systems, you can:
- Read Codes: Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to identify issues.
- Clear Codes: Erase DTCs after repairs are completed.
- View Live Data: Monitor real-time data from various sensors in text or graph format.

3.4 Special Service Functions
The MD806 PRO integrates 7 commonly used maintenance and reset services:
- Oil Reset: Resets the engine oil life system after an oil change.
- Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Reset: Deactivates and reactivates the brake control system for brake service and maintenance.
- Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Reset: Performs calibration of the Steering Angle Sensor.
- Battery Management System (BMS) Registration: Registers a new battery with the vehicle's ECU.
- Throttle Relearn: Relearns the throttle body position.
- Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) Reset: Adjusts the air/fuel ratio parameters.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (D-P.F) Regeneration: Manages DPF regeneration processes.

Note: The availability and specific procedures for each service function are vehicle-specific. Always refer to the vehicle's service manual for detailed instructions.
3.5 Full OBD2 Functions
The MD806 PRO supports all 10 modes of OBD2 tests for emission-related conditions:
- Read/Erase DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
- View Live Data
- Freeze Frame Data
- Vehicle Information
- I/M Readiness Status (Inspection/Maintenance)
- O2 Monitor Test
- On-Board Monitor Test
- EVAP Leak Test
- Modules Present

3.6 Live Data and Freeze Frame Data
The tool allows viewing live data streams from multiple sensors simultaneously, either in text or graphical format. This helps in quickly identifying sensor malfunctions or performance issues. Freeze Frame Data captures a snapshot of critical engine parameters (e.g., RPM, fuel pressure, coolant temperature) at the moment a fault code was set, providing valuable diagnostic information.
4. Maintenance
- Software Updates: Regularly update the device software to ensure optimal performance, expanded vehicle coverage, and access to new features.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the device. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the device in its protective carrying case in a dry, cool environment when not in use.
- Cable Inspection: Periodically inspect the OBD2 and USB cables for any signs of damage. Replace if necessary.
5. Troubleshooting and Important Considerations
- Vehicle Compatibility: The MD806 PRO primarily supports vehicles from 2002-2017. It may not support newer vehicles (e.g., 2018, 2019, 2020, and later models).
- Bidirectional Control: This tool does not support bidirectional control (active tests).
- Function Limitations: Specific functions and vehicle coverage are not universal and can vary by vehicle make, model, and year. If unsure about compatibility for a specific function, contact Autel support with your vehicle's VIN.
- Secure Gateway (SGW) / FCA AutoAuth: Due to security systems like SGW/FCA AutoAuth, this tool may be unable to clear OBDII module codes for all equipped vehicles.
- Software Update Requirement: A Windows PC is required for software updates. Users without a Windows PC may face challenges in updating the device.
