1. Introduction
The MeterTo MD120 Digital Multi-function Wall Detector is a precision instrument designed to accurately locate metal objects (magnetic and non-magnetic), wood studs, and live AC wires hidden behind walls, floors, and ceilings. This device provides reliable detection up to a depth of 120mm, enhancing safety and efficiency for various construction, renovation, and DIY projects. Please read this manual thoroughly before operation to ensure proper use and to maximize the lifespan of your device.
2. Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent personal injury and damage to the device:
- Do not attempt to open or modify the device. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
- Keep the device dry. Exposure to moisture can damage internal components.
- Avoid extreme temperatures. Store and operate the device within the specified temperature ranges.
- Always turn off the device when not in use to conserve battery life.
- Before drilling or cutting into any surface, always confirm the absence of live wires, pipes, or other hazards using the detector.
- Do not rely solely on the detector for safety. Always exercise caution and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Components:
- LCD Display: Shows detection mode, signal strength, battery status, and depth indication.
- Power Button: Turns the device on/off.
- Mode Selection Buttons: Dedicated buttons for Metal, Wood, and AC Wire detection modes.
- Buzzer/Silent Mode Button: Toggles audible alerts.
- Backlight Button: Activates/deactivates display backlight.
- Sensor Area: Located on the back of the device, this area must be in contact with the surface being scanned.
- Battery Compartment: Located on the back, for 9V battery.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the MD120 detector.
- Slide the cover open.
- Insert one 9-volt (6LR61) battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
The device is ready for use once the battery is installed. The battery indicator on the LCD will show the current battery level.
5. Operating Instructions
Before scanning, ensure the surface is clean and dry. Avoid scanning over wet paint, wallpaper, or highly textured surfaces as this may affect accuracy.
5.1 Powering On/Off
- Press the Power Button (circular button with a line and circle icon) to turn the device on. The LCD will illuminate.
- To turn off, press and hold the Power Button for approximately 2 seconds. The device will also automatically switch off after 5 minutes of inactivity.
5.2 Mode Selection
Select the appropriate detection mode based on the material you wish to locate:
- Metal Detection: Press the button with the magnet icon. This mode detects both magnetic (e.g., rebar, iron pipes) and non-magnetic metals (e.g., copper pipes, aluminum studs).
- Wood Detection: Press the button with the wood icon. This mode is optimized for locating wood studs and joists.
- AC Wire Detection: Press the button with the lightning bolt icon. This mode detects live unshielded AC wires (110-230 volts).
5.3 Scanning Procedure
- Place the Detector: Place the detector flat against the surface you intend to scan. Ensure the sensor area is fully in contact.
- Calibrate (if necessary): For optimal accuracy, especially in wood and metal modes, it is recommended to calibrate the device by placing it on the wall where no objects are expected and pressing the mode button. The device will self-calibrate.
- Move Slowly: Slowly slide the detector horizontally across the surface. Maintain constant contact and pressure.
- Observe the Display: As the detector approaches an object, the signal strength indicator on the LCD will increase. An audible beep will also sound if the buzzer is enabled.
- Mark the Edges: When the signal strength peaks and then begins to decrease, you have passed the center of the object. Mark the edges where the signal begins to rise and fall to determine the width of the object.
- Verify: For critical applications, scan the area from multiple directions to confirm the location and extent of the detected object.
5.4 Depth Indication
The MD120 provides an approximate depth indication on the LCD display, helping you understand how deep the detected object is within the wall. This feature is most accurate for metal and wood detection.
| Material | Maximum Probing Depth |
|---|---|
| Magnetic Metal | 120mm |
| Non-magnetic Metal | 80mm |
| Charged Wire (110-230V) | 30mm |
| Wood | 38mm |
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your MD120 detector.
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the sensor area is clean and free of debris.
- Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the battery to prevent leakage.
- Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the LCD.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your MD120 detector, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly installed battery. | Replace the 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings or inconsistent detection. | Improper calibration, scanning too fast, or surface conditions. | Recalibrate the device by placing it on an empty wall section and pressing the mode button. Scan slowly and maintain firm contact. Ensure the surface is dry. |
| No detection of live AC wires. | Wires are shielded, not live, or too deep. | Ensure the circuit is active. The detector may not detect shielded wires or wires deeper than 30mm. |
| Buzzer not sounding. | Silent mode is activated. | Press the Buzzer/Silent Mode Button to enable audible alerts. |
