1. Introduction and Overview
The ZIRCON HD950c is a professional-grade wall scanner designed to accurately detect the edges and centers of wood studs, metal studs, and live AC electrical wiring behind various wall surfaces. This device is ideal for home improvement projects, renovations, and installations requiring precise knowledge of hidden structures within walls.
Key capabilities include:
- One-step detection of stud centers.
- Detection through wall thicknesses up to 38mm.
- Identification of live AC electrical wiring.
The HD950c features a 3-color multi-color LCD display for clear indications and a low battery warning function to ensure reliable operation.
2. Safety Information
Please read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before operating this device. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.
- Battery Safety: The ZIRCON HD950c requires one 9V alkaline battery, which is sold separately. Ensure correct battery polarity when installing. Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Wall Conditions: Detection accuracy can be affected by wall material, thickness, humidity, and the presence of moisture in paint or wallpaper. Walls containing metal (iron, aluminum, stainless steel, lath), metal fibers, mud walls, fiber walls, concrete, mortar, ALC board, siding walls, wet walls, ceramic, tile, carpet, or walls with uneven thickness/density may hinder accurate detection.
- Indoor Use Only: This device is designed for indoor use on interior walls. Do not use on exterior walls or walls containing insulation, as this may lead to inaccurate readings.
- False Positives: The device may detect objects other than studs behind walls. Always verify findings using other methods if critical accuracy is required.
- Live Wire Detection: While the device can detect live AC wires, always exercise extreme caution when working near detected electrical sources. Turn off power at the circuit breaker before drilling or cutting into walls where live wires may be present.
3. Product Features
- Detection Capabilities: Locates wood studs, metal studs, and live AC electrical wiring.
- Detection Depth: Capable of detecting objects up to 38mm (1.5 inches) deep.
- Display: Features a 3-color multi-color LCD display for clear visual feedback.
- Low Battery Indicator: Alerts the user when the battery level is low, ensuring consistent performance.
- Construction: Durable plastic housing.
- Water Resistance: Designed with water-resistant properties for enhanced durability.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
- Insert one new 9V alkaline battery, ensuring the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals align correctly with the markings inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Note: Batteries are not included and must be purchased separately.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On and Calibration
- Place the device flat against the wall in an area where you are certain there are no studs or live wires.
- Press and hold the power/scan button. The device will emit a beep and the display will illuminate.
- Keep the button pressed. The device will automatically calibrate. Wait for the calibration process to complete (usually a few seconds) before moving the device.
5.2 Scanning Procedure (Stud Detection Example)
The screen color changes depending on the detection mode (e.g., wood, metal, live wire). The following steps illustrate a typical stud detection process:

Image: Simple example of stud detection procedure.
- Start Scan: After setting the desired detection mode, place the unit flat against the wall. Press and hold the scan button, then slowly move the device horizontally across the wall. Do not lift your finger from the button during the scan.
- Identify Stud Center: As you move the unit while holding the button, the device will indicate the center of a stud. The 'SpotLite' indicator on the screen will illuminate to confirm the center.
- Mark and Verify: When the center of the stud is detected, the signal strength will be at its maximum, and the 'SpotLite' point light will be fully lit. Mark this spot. Continue scanning to the left and right of the marked spot to determine the full width of the stud.
5.3 Interpreting the Display
- LCD Screen: Provides visual cues for detected objects, signal strength, and mode selection.
- Audio Alerts: The device will emit audible signals when an object is detected, with varying tones or frequencies indicating proximity or type of object.
- SpotLite Indicator: A specific light or icon on the display that illuminates when the center of a stud is located.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the device in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The recommended storage temperature range is -29°C to 66°C (-20°F to 150°F).
- Battery Removal: Always remove the 9V battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent battery leakage and potential damage to the unit.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ZIRCON HD950c, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate or inconsistent readings | Improper calibration, unsuitable wall material, high humidity, or presence of other objects. | Recalibrate the device on a clear section of the wall. Ensure the wall surface is dry and free from obstructions. Verify findings with alternative methods if necessary. |
| Device does not power on | Dead or improperly installed battery. | Replace the 9V battery with a new one. Check battery polarity. |
| No detection or weak signal | Wall too thick, dense, or contains materials that interfere with scanning. | Ensure the wall thickness is within the 38mm detection limit. The device may not work on concrete, metal-lath, or very dense walls. |
| Random beeping or false alerts | Interference from other electronic devices, static electricity, or highly textured wall surfaces. | Move away from other electronics. Ensure the device is held flat against the wall and moved slowly and steadily. Recalibrate. |
