3. Safety Information

Read these instructions carefully before installing or operating the UPS. Keep this manual for future reference.

  • This UPS is intended for indoor use only.
  • Do not operate the UPS in direct sunlight, in contact with fluids, or where there is excessive dust or humidity.
  • Ensure the ventilation openings are not blocked.
  • Connect the UPS power cable directly to a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords.
  • The battery is not user-replaceable. Refer to qualified service personnel for battery replacement.
  • Always disconnect the UPS from the power supply before cleaning or servicing.

4. Setup

  1. Unpack the UPS: Carefully remove the UPS from its packaging and inspect it for any damage.
  2. Placement: Position the UPS in a location that allows for adequate ventilation. The slim, modern design allows for upright, flat, or wall-mounted installation. Ensure it is away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture.
  3. Connect to Utility Power: Plug the UPS power cord into a grounded 230V AC wall outlet. The UPS will begin charging its internal battery. Allow the battery to charge for at least 8 hours before connecting critical equipment to ensure maximum runtime.
  4. Connect Equipment: Plug your electronic devices (e.g., computer, monitor, network gateway) into the universal outlets on the UPS. Ensure that the total power consumption of connected devices does not exceed the UPS's capacity (300W).
  5. Power On: Press the power button on the front of the UPS to turn it on. The indicator light will illuminate.

5. Operation

5.1 Power On/Off

  • To Power On: Press and hold the power button until the indicator light illuminates.
  • To Power Off: Press and hold the power button until the indicator light turns off.

5.2 Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)

The UPS automatically corrects low and high voltages to safe levels for your connected equipment without switching to battery power. This feature helps to preserve battery life and maximize runtime during actual power outages.

5.3 Battery Backup Function

During a power outage, the UPS will automatically switch to battery power, providing temporary power to connected devices. The UPS will emit an audible alarm to indicate it is operating on battery power. The indicator light will also change status to reflect battery operation.

During a power outage, save any open files and shut down your computer properly to prevent data loss. The UPS provides sufficient runtime for this purpose, especially for critical low-power devices like network gateways.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Care

  • The UPS contains a sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid battery.
  • To ensure optimal battery life, keep the UPS connected to utility power at all times.
  • Avoid storing the UPS in extreme temperatures.
  • The battery is not user-serviceable. If the battery requires replacement, contact APC customer support or a qualified service technician.

6.2 Cleaning

Periodically clean the exterior of the UPS with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your APC BV500I-MS Easy UPS.

  • UPS does not turn on:
    • Ensure the UPS power cord is securely plugged into a live wall outlet.
    • Verify the wall outlet is functioning by plugging in another device.
    • Ensure the power button is pressed and held long enough to activate the unit.
  • UPS is beeping continuously or frequently:
    • This usually indicates the UPS is operating on battery power due to a power outage or severe voltage fluctuation. Save your work and shut down connected equipment if the outage is prolonged.
    • If utility power is present, check for an overload condition (too many devices connected or devices drawing too much power). Disconnect non-essential equipment.
  • Connected equipment loses power during an outage:
    • Ensure equipment is plugged into the battery backup outlets, not just surge-only outlets (if applicable, though this model has universal outlets for battery backup).
    • The UPS might be overloaded. Reduce the number of connected devices.
    • The battery may be depleted or at the end of its service life. Allow the UPS to charge for 8 hours, or consider battery replacement if the issue persists.
