EBS EBS-MB3
EBS MicroBass 3 Bass Preamp/DI Pedal User Manual
Brand: EBS | Model: EBS-MB3
Introduction
The EBS MicroBass 3 is a professional-grade 2-channel preamplifier and DI pedal, meticulously designed by EBS in Sweden. It incorporates advanced technologies derived from the acclaimed HD360 and Fafner II amplifier designs, ensuring exceptional sound quality and versatility. This unit operates at a signal level comparable to a professional mixing console, providing ample headroom for various applications. Its high signal level makes it an ideal preamplifier for use with any type of power amplifier.
The MicroBass 3 offers both Clean and Drive channels, which can be run independently, in series, or in parallel. It features dual balanced XLR outputs, allowing simultaneous signal tapping both post and pre-EQ. When the effects loop is configured for stereo mode, these balanced outputs function as dedicated left and right outputs. With an input impedance of 10 Mohms, the MicroBass 3 is compatible with all bass types, including passive, active, and those equipped with piezo pickups. Additionally, it includes a convenient built-in tuner and a compressor, similar to those found in other EBS amplifiers, ensuring consistent and reliable sound performance.

Setup
Connecting Power
Connect a 9V DC power supply with a minimum current rating of 400mA to the 9V DC 400 mA input jack located on the rear panel of the unit. Ensure the power supply polarity matches the pedal's requirements (center negative).
Audio Connections
The MicroBass 3 offers a variety of input and output options for flexible integration into your setup.
- INPUT: Connect your bass guitar or other instrument to this 1/4" input jack on the front panel.
- OUTPUT: Connect this 1/4" jack to your amplifier's input or other effects pedals.
- FX SEND / FX RETURN: Use these 1/4" jacks to connect external effects pedals. The effects loop can be configured for stereo operation.
- POST BAL OUT / PRE/POST BAL OUT: These are balanced XLR outputs for connecting to a mixing console, audio interface, or PA system. The "POST BAL OUT" provides a signal after the EQ, while the "PRE/POST BAL OUT" can be switched to provide either a pre-EQ or post-EQ signal.
- AUX IN: Connect an external audio source (e.g., an MP3 player) to this 1/8" stereo jack for practice.
- HEADPHONES: Connect stereo headphones to this 1/8" jack for silent practice.

Operating Instructions
Controls Overview
Familiarize yourself with the various controls on the MicroBass 3 to achieve your desired tone.
- Input Section:
- GAIN (Input): Adjusts the input sensitivity. Use the associated LED to ensure optimal signal level without clipping.
- Clean Channel:
- COMP: Controls the amount of compression applied to the clean signal.
- BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency response.
- MID: Controls the mid-frequency response. This knob often has a frequency selector or sweep for precise control.
- TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response.
- MASTER: Sets the overall output level of the clean channel.
- Drive Channel:
- GAIN (Drive): Controls the intensity of the overdrive/distortion effect.
- TYPE: Selects different drive characteristics or voicings.
- TONE: Shapes the tonal character of the drive sound.
- BLEND: Mixes the clean signal with the driven signal. Turn clockwise for more drive, counter-clockwise for more clean.
- LEVEL: Sets the output level of the drive channel.
- Footswitches:
- MUTE: Toggles the output mute function, useful for silent tuning.
- DRIVE: Engages or disengages the drive channel.
- Rear Panel Controls:
- GND LIFT: Helps eliminate hum caused by ground loops.
- POST CLEAN / CHR: A switch that likely affects the signal routing or character of one of the balanced outputs. Refer to the detailed manual for specific functionality.
- STEREO MODE ON/OFF: A switch to enable or disable stereo operation for the effects loop and balanced outputs.
- SERIAL ON/OFF: A switch to select between serial or parallel routing of the Clean and Drive channels.
Using the Channels (Series/Parallel)
The MicroBass 3 allows you to run its Clean and Drive channels in either series or parallel configuration. This is controlled by the SERIAL ON/OFF switch on the front panel. In series mode, the signal flows from the Clean channel into the Drive channel. In parallel mode, the clean and drive signals are processed independently and then blended together, offering different tonal possibilities.
Tuner and Compressor
The built-in tuner is activated by pressing the MUTE footswitch. The display will show the note being played, allowing for quick and accurate tuning between songs without the need for an external device. The integrated compressor, similar to those found in other EBS amplifiers, provides dynamic control over your signal, helping to even out notes and add sustain. Adjust the COMP knob on the Clean channel to dial in the desired amount of compression.

Maintenance
Cleaning
To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no liquid enters the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish and internal components.
Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the MicroBass 3 in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. It is recommended to keep it in its original packaging or a protective case to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage.
General Care
Always handle the unit with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts. Ensure all cables are connected and disconnected gently to prevent damage to the jacks. Do not attempt to open the chassis or perform any internal repairs, as this will void the warranty and may cause electric shock.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your EBS MicroBass 3, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps before seeking professional service.
No Sound Output
- Check Power: Ensure the power supply is correctly connected and providing the specified 9V DC 400mA. Verify the power outlet is functional.
- Cable Connections: Confirm all audio cables (input, output, FX loop) are securely plugged in and are not faulty. Try swapping cables.
- Volume Levels: Check that the MASTER, LEVEL, and any connected amplifier volumes are turned up.
- MUTE Footswitch: Ensure the MUTE footswitch is not engaged. The associated LED should be off for sound output.
- Instrument: Test your instrument directly into an amplifier to ensure it is working correctly.
Hum or Noise
- Ground Loop: Engage the GND LIFT switch on the rear panel to see if it reduces hum.
- Power Supply: Use a high-quality, regulated power supply. Unregulated or noisy power supplies can introduce hum.
- Cables: Use shielded instrument cables. Faulty or unshielded cables can pick up interference.
- Nearby Electronics: Move the unit away from other electronic devices (e.g., power adapters, fluorescent lights) that might be causing interference.
Controls Not Responding / Unexpected Behavior
- Reset: Disconnect power for a few seconds and then reconnect it.
- Firmware: Check the EBS website for any available firmware updates (if applicable for this model).
- Environmental Factors: Ensure the unit is not exposed to extreme temperatures or humidity.
If the issue persists after trying these steps, please contact EBS customer support or an authorized service center.
