Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to correctly install the throat needle plate and feed dog on your Juki LZ-2280 or LZ-2290 zig-zag sewing machine.

  1. Prepare the Machine: Turn off and unplug your Juki sewing machine. Raise the presser foot and needle to their highest positions.
  2. Remove Existing Parts:
    • Locate the screws holding the existing throat plate in place. Use a screwdriver to carefully loosen and remove these screws.
    • Lift off the old throat plate.
    • Beneath the throat plate, you will find the feed dog. Remove the screws securing the old feed dog and carefully lift it out.
  3. Install New Feed Dog:
    • Position the new EverNice Feeder Feed Dog (Part #225-82407) into its designated slot. Ensure the teeth are facing upwards and align with the screw holes.
    • Secure the feed dog with the appropriate screws. Do not overtighten.

  4. Install New Throat Needle Plate:
    • Place the new EverNice Throat Needle Plate (Part #225-81508) over the installed feed dog, aligning the needle hole and feed dog slots correctly.
    • Align the screw holes on the throat plate with those on the machine bed.
    • Insert and tighten the screws to secure the throat plate. Ensure it is flush with the machine bed and does not wobble.
  5. Final Check: Gently lower the presser foot and manually turn the handwheel to ensure the needle passes cleanly through the needle hole and the feed dog moves freely without obstruction.

Operating Considerations

After installation, perform a test stitch on a scrap piece of fabric to verify proper function.

  • Ensure the needle is correctly inserted and not bent.
  • Check that the bobbin case and bobbin are properly seated.
  • Listen for any unusual noises during operation, which may indicate incorrect installation or a need for adjustment.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly remove the throat plate and use a small brush to clean lint and dust from the feed dog area and bobbin case. Accumulation of lint can affect stitch quality and machine performance.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the feed dog teeth for wear or damage. Worn teeth can lead to uneven fabric feeding. Check the throat plate for burrs or nicks around the needle hole, which can snag thread or damage fabric.

Troubleshooting

  • Fabric Not Feeding Evenly:
    • Check if the feed dog is installed correctly and its teeth are not clogged with lint.
    • Ensure the presser foot pressure is appropriate for the fabric.
    • Inspect feed dog teeth for wear.
  • Needle Breaking:
    • Verify the needle is inserted correctly and is the appropriate type and size for your fabric.
    • Ensure the throat plate is securely fastened and the needle passes through the hole without hitting the edges.
  • Skipped Stitches:
    • Can be caused by a bent needle or incorrect needle insertion.
    • Ensure the throat plate is flush and not interfering with the bobbin area.
