1. Product Overview
The Johnson 40-6647 Self-Leveling Cross and Line Laser Kit is designed for precise leveling tasks both indoors and outdoors. This versatile tool projects both horizontal and vertical laser lines, creating a cross-line, and includes an additional 90° plumb line for checking square references. Featuring GreenBrite® technology, the laser beams are significantly more visible than traditional red beams, making it ideal for bright conditions. An integrated visual out-of-level indicator ensures accuracy by flashing the beam if the unit cannot self-level. The kit comes complete with a magnetic target, magnetic bracket, tinted glasses, and a hard-shell carrying case for convenience and protection.

2. Setup and Initial Use
2.1 Unpacking and Battery Installation
Carefully remove all components from the hard-shell carrying case. The kit includes the laser unit, magnetic target, magnetic bracket, tinted glasses, and two "AA" alkaline batteries. Locate the battery compartment on the laser unit, typically on the back or bottom. Insert the two "AA" alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity as indicated inside the compartment. Close the battery compartment securely.
2.2 Mounting the Laser
The 40-6647 laser can be used in various configurations:
- Flat Surface: Place the laser directly on a stable, flat surface.
- Magnetic Mounting: Utilize the included magnetic bracket to attach the laser to metallic surfaces.
- Tripod Mounting: The unit features a standard tripod thread (1/4"-20) on its base, allowing it to be mounted on a compatible tripod for elevated or precise positioning.

2.3 Wearing Safety Glasses
Always wear the provided tinted glasses when operating the laser, especially in bright conditions, to enhance visibility of the green laser lines and protect your eyes from direct exposure to the laser beam.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Powering On and Self-Leveling Mode
To power on the device and activate the self-leveling mode, slide the main power switch to the "ON" position. The laser will automatically attempt to self-level. If the unit is outside its self-leveling range (approximately ±6 degrees), the laser lines will flash, indicating that the unit needs to be adjusted to a more level surface. Once level, the lines will become solid.

3.2 Selecting Laser Modes
The 40-6647 offers multiple laser projection modes. Use the mode selection button (often located on top of the unit) to cycle through the available options:
- Horizontal Line Only: Projects a single horizontal laser line.
- Vertical Line Only: Projects a single vertical laser line.
- Cross-Line (Horizontal + Vertical): Projects both horizontal and vertical lines simultaneously, creating a cross.
- Cross-Line + 90° Plumb Line: Projects the cross-line along with an additional vertical line at a 90-degree angle to the main vertical line, useful for squaring.

3.3 Manual Mode (Locked Pendulum)
To project lines at an angle (e.g., for stair rails), engage the pendulum lock. This typically involves sliding the main power switch to a specific "locked" or "manual" position. In this mode, the self-leveling feature is disabled, and the laser lines will not flash even if the unit is tilted. This allows for projecting lines at any desired angle.
3.4 Using the Magnetic Target
The magnetic target can be used to enhance the visibility of the laser line over longer distances or in bright conditions. Place the target at the desired measurement point. The reflective surface and markings on the target help to pinpoint the exact location of the laser beam.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
Keep the laser unit clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. For the laser apertures, use a clean, lint-free cloth or a lens cleaning solution designed for optics. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the housing or lenses.
4.2 Storage
When not in use, always store the laser in its hard-shell carrying case to protect it from impacts, dust, and moisture. Ensure the pendulum lock is engaged before storing to prevent internal damage during transport or storage.

4.3 Battery Care
Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and potential damage to the device. Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears or when laser brightness diminishes.
5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Laser lines are flashing. | Unit is out of self-leveling range. | Place the unit on a more level surface. Adjust the tripod or mounting until the lines become solid. |
| No laser lines projected. |
|
|
| Laser lines are dim or hard to see. |
