3. Setup and Installation
This door knob is designed to fit doors 1 3/8" - 1 3/4" (35mm - 45mm) thick. It requires a standard 2 1/8" (54mm) installation hole and features an adjustable backset of 2 3/8" (60mm) or 2 3/4" (70mm).
3.1 Door Preparation
If installing on a new door, ensure the door is properly bored with a 2 1/8" (54mm) cross bore and a 1" (25mm) edge bore. The backset (distance from door edge to center of cross bore) should be either 2 3/8" (60mm) or 2 3/4" (70mm).

Figure 3.1: Dimensional diagram for door knob installation. This diagram illustrates key measurements for proper door preparation, including backset (D), door thickness (C), and bore hole diameters (A, B).
3.2 Latch Installation
- Determine the correct backset for your door (2 3/8" or 2 3/4"). Adjust the latch mechanism if necessary by twisting the housing until it clicks into the desired position.
- Insert the latch into the edge bore hole, ensuring the bevel of the latch bolt faces the door frame.
- Secure the latch with the provided screws.
3.3 Knob Installation
- Install the exterior knob assembly. Ensure the spindle passes through the latch mechanism.
- Install the interior knob assembly, aligning the mounting posts with the holes in the exterior assembly.
- Secure the interior and exterior knobs together using the long mounting screws. Tighten evenly until snug, but do not overtighten.
- Test the latch operation by turning both knobs. The latch bolt should retract smoothly.
3.4 Strike Plate Installation
- Close the door to mark the position where the latch bolt strikes the door frame.
- Chisel out a shallow recess for the strike plate and drill a hole for the latch bolt.
- Install the strike plate using the provided screws. Ensure the door closes and latches smoothly without binding.
4. Operation
4.1 Locking and Unlocking from Exterior
Insert the key into the keyway on the exterior knob. Turn the key to lock or unlock the mechanism. Remove the key once the desired state is achieved.
4.2 Locking and Unlocking from Interior
From the interior side, rotate the turn button on the knob to lock or unlock the door. The door can always be opened from the interior by turning the knob, even if locked, for emergency egress.
5. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Clean the door knob with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or polishing agents, as these can damage the finish.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a silicone-based spray lubricant to the latch bolt and keyway to ensure smooth operation. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dust and grime.
- Tightening: Check mounting screws periodically and tighten if necessary to prevent wobbling or loose operation.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Knob is loose or wobbly. | Mounting screws are loose. | Tighten the mounting screws evenly. |
| Latch bolt does not retract smoothly. | Lack of lubrication; misalignment. | Apply graphite lubricant to the latch mechanism. Check for proper alignment of the latch and strike plate. |
| Key is difficult to turn or remove. | Keyway is dirty or needs lubrication. | Apply graphite lubricant into the keyway. Ensure the key is fully inserted. |
| Door does not latch or close properly. | Strike plate misalignment; door sag. | Adjust the strike plate position. Check door hinges for sag. |
