1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your VOTRONIC Battery Charger 3100 Pb 1215 SMT 2B. This 12V 15A charger is designed for various battery types, including lead-acid, gel, AGM, and LiFePO4 lithium batteries. Please read these instructions carefully before using the device to ensure safe and efficient operation.
2. Safety Instructions
- Always disconnect the charger from the power supply before making or breaking connections to the battery.
- Ensure proper ventilation during charging, especially for lead-acid batteries, as they can emit explosive gases.
- Do not expose the charger to rain or moisture.
- Avoid short-circuiting the battery terminals.
- Use appropriate cable cross-sections as specified in the installation diagram to prevent overheating.
- Install fuses as close as possible to the batteries for cable protection.
- For LiFePO4 batteries, a connected temperature sensor is mandatory for safety reasons.
- Keep out of reach of children.
3. Setup and Installation
Follow the connection diagram carefully for proper installation. Ensure all connections are secure and correctly polarized.
3.1. Connection Diagram

Figure 1: Connection diagram for the VOTRONIC Battery Charger 3100 Pb 1215 SMT 2B. This diagram illustrates the wiring for the main battery (Hauptbatterie) and an optional start battery (Startbatterie), including fuse placement and temperature sensor connection.
3.2. Wiring Instructions
- Main Battery (Hauptbatterie):
- Connect the positive (+) terminal of the charger to the positive (+) terminal of the main battery using a red cable (2.5-10 mm²).
- Connect the negative (-) terminal of the charger to the negative (-) terminal of the main battery using a black cable (2.5-10 mm²).
- Install a fuse (Sich. 1) of 25-40 A in the positive line, as close as possible to the main battery.
- Optional Start Battery (Startbatterie):
- Connect the secondary positive (+) output (labeled "II START") of the charger to the positive (+) terminal of the start battery using a red cable (1.5-2.5 mm²).
- Connect the negative (-) terminal of the start battery to the vehicle chassis (Karosserie).
- Install a fuse (Sich. 2) of 15 A in the positive line, as close as possible to the start battery.
- Cable Preparation: Strip cable ends by approximately 10 mm before connecting them to the terminals.
- Vibration Dampeners: Do not remove the rubber sleeves intended for vibration reduction.
- Remote Control Connection: The charger has a connection point for an optional remote control.
3.3. Battery Type Selection
Set the battery type for the main battery (Hauptbatterie I) using the white-colored selector switch on the charger. The available settings are:
- Lead Acid / AGM 1 (14.4V): For standard lead-acid and AGM batteries.
- Gel (14.4V): For gel batteries.
- AGM 2 (14.7V): For specific AGM batteries requiring a higher charging voltage.
- LiFePO4 (14.4V): For Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries.
Important Note for LiFePO4 Batteries: For safety reasons, the device operates with LiFePO4 batteries only when a temperature sensor is connected. Mount the temperature sensor to the negative (-) pole of the battery.
4. Operating Instructions
The VOTRONIC charger offers various charging programs and features to optimize battery life and performance.
4.1. Charging Programs Overview
- "Gel" Program (IU1oU2oU3 characteristic curve): Designed for sealed, gas-tight gel/dryfit batteries. This program uses a higher charging voltage and longer U1 hold times for fast charging and high storage capacity, preventing long-term battery "starvation."
- "AGM" Program (IU1oU2oU3 characteristic curve): For sealed, gas-tight AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries. It features a particularly high U1 level with adapted hold times for full charge, followed by a moderate U2 level for charge maintenance (plate and round cell technology).
- "Universal" Program (IU1oU2oU3 characteristic curve): A universal program for charging and maintaining lead-acid batteries in vehicles (mobile/stationary mixed use). With an average U1 level, it provides short charging times, good charge factor, and acid mixing for open and closed, low-maintenance and maintenance-free batteries, electric batteries, solar lamps, heavy-duty batteries, and AGM batteries with normal U1 level.
- "LiFePO4" Program (IU1oU2oU3 characteristic curve): Adapted for Lithium-LiFePO4 batteries with their own prescribed or integrated BMS and protection circuit. A special rest maintenance automatically keeps the LiFePO4 battery at a life-extending charge level of 50-80% when the vehicle is parked (seasonal operation). It also buffers 12V consumers and the vehicle's starter battery. A regular automatic wake-up function activates cell balancing.
4.2. Key Features
- Parallel and Buffer Operation: The battery is still charged or fully maintained even with simultaneous consumption.
- Silent Run Function: Optimized operation at the touch of a button.
- Power Function: Allows powering consumers without a battery.
- Charge Cable Compensation: Voltage losses on charging cables are adjusted.
- Parallel Operation with Other Systems: Can operate in parallel with solar systems, wind generators, gasoline generators, alternators, etc., on a single battery.
- Charge Aid for Deeply Discharged Lead Batteries: Gentle pre-charging of lead batteries down to 8V, then powerful support even if consumers are still on.
- Battery Separation: Automatic separation of batteries in case of power failure, overheating, or incorrect operation (safety switch per charge output).
5. Maintenance
- Lead Battery Regeneration: The charger performs regeneration of lead batteries twice a week during long periods of inactivity to counteract harmful acid stratification, extending battery life.
- LiFePO4 Maintenance: The LiFePO4 program includes an automatic stop and a moderate automatic activation of battery cell balancing every 10 days to ensure full battery charge and optimal lifespan.
- Regularly check all cable connections for tightness and corrosion.
- Keep the charger clean and free from dust and debris.
6. Troubleshooting
The VOTRONIC charger is equipped with multiple protection features to ensure safe operation. If the charger is not functioning as expected, consider the following:
- No Charging Indication:
- Check if the charger is properly connected to the mains power supply.
- Verify battery connections are secure and correctly polarized.
- Inspect fuses (Sich. 1 and Sich. 2) for continuity.
- Overload Protection: The charger is protected against overload. If an overload occurs, the charging current will be reduced or temporarily interrupted.
- Overheating Protection: The device is protected against overheating. If the internal temperature becomes too high, the charging current will be reduced or charging will stop until the temperature returns to a safe level.
- Overvoltage Protection: Prevents damage from excessive voltage.
- Short-Circuit Protection: Protects against damage from short circuits at the output.
- Reverse Polarity Protection: Prevents damage if battery connections are reversed.
- Battery Discharge Protection: Prevents the battery from discharging back through the charger.
- LiFePO4 Battery Not Charging: Ensure the temperature sensor is correctly connected to the negative pole of the LiFePO4 battery. The device will not operate with LiFePO4 batteries without it.
If problems persist, consult a qualified technician or contact VOTRONIC customer support.
