Setup
- Mounting the Lens: Align the white dot on the lens barrel with the white dot on your Nikon Z series camera body. Gently twist the lens clockwise until it clicks into place.
- Camera Settings for Manual Lens: As this is a fully manual lens, you must enable the "Release SHUTTER W/O LENS" option in your camera's custom functions menu. Refer to your camera's instruction manual for specific steps to access and enable this setting.
Operating the Lens
Manual Focus
The manual focus ring is located towards the front of the lens. It offers a smooth rotation with approximately 90 degrees of travel from minimum focus distance to infinity. This travel distance allows for precise focusing, especially when shooting at wide apertures. For optimal manual focusing, utilize your camera's focus peaking and magnification features.
Note: When focusing to infinity, the ring can turn slightly past the infinity mark. For perfectly sharp distant subjects, turn the ring to the end and then slightly back until the subject is in sharp focus using your camera's focus aids.
Aperture Control
The aperture ring is positioned at the very front of the lens. It is a de-clicked aperture ring, meaning it rotates smoothly without distinct clicks between aperture stops. This design is particularly beneficial for videographers as it allows for seamless aperture adjustments during video recording without audible clicks. Photographers can also appreciate the smooth control for fine-tuning depth of field.
The aperture range is F1.7 to F22.
Image Quality Characteristics
Sharpness
The lens delivers impressive sharpness, particularly in the center of the frame, even at its maximum aperture of F1.7. For even greater sharpness, stopping down the aperture slightly to F2 or F2.8 will yield excellent results. Corner sharpness improves significantly when stopped down to F4 or F5.6.
Vignetting
Some vignetting (darkening of the corners) is present at the maximum aperture of F1.7. This effect gradually reduces as the aperture is stopped down, becoming minimal or absent around F4.
Distortion
Minor barrel distortion may be observed in specific test conditions, such as shooting brick walls. However, in typical real-world photography scenarios, distortion is generally not noticeable.
Lens Flare and Contrast
While the lens features multi-layer coatings, it may exhibit noticeable lens flare and a reduction in contrast when a strong light source is directly in front of the lens. To minimize flare, use the included lens hood and consider stopping down the aperture. Avoiding direct strong light sources in the frame can also help maintain contrast.
Bokeh
The F1.7 aperture allows for beautiful shallow depth of field and pleasing bokeh (background blur). At wider apertures, a slight swirly bokeh effect may be observed in the corners, which can add a unique character to images. This effect diminishes when stopped down to F2.8 or narrower.
Accessories
The Meike 50mm F1.7 lens comes with a reversible lens hood and front/rear lens caps. The reversible design of the lens hood allows for compact storage when not in use, by attaching it in reverse onto the lens barrel.

- Images are blurry: Verify that the manual focus is correctly set. Utilize your camera's focus peaking and magnification features for precise focus. Ensure the aperture is appropriate for your desired depth of field.
- Excessive lens flare: Attach the lens hood. Try to reposition your camera to avoid direct strong light sources entering the lens. Stop down the aperture to reduce the effect.
