Setup

1. Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the molded case. Inspect the jSax for any visible damage. The package should include the jSax instrument, Nuvo synthetic reeds (1.5 and 2 strength), and a durable molded case.

2. Reed Installation

The jSax uses Nuvo synthetic reeds, and can also accommodate standard soprano saxophone reeds or E-flat clarinet reeds. For beginners, start with the softer 1.5 strength reed for easier playability.

  1. Gently slide the chosen reed into the mouthpiece ligature.
  2. Ensure the flat side of the reed is flush against the mouthpiece opening.
  3. Tighten the ligature screws just enough to hold the reed firmly in place without overtightening, which can damage the reed.

3. Mouthpiece Attachment

Carefully attach the mouthpiece assembly to the main body of the jSax. Twist gently to ensure a snug fit without excessive force.

4. Thumb Rest Adjustment

Adjust the thumb rest to a comfortable position that allows for relaxed hand posture and easy access to the keys.

5. Training Wheel Tone Hole Seals

For beginners with smaller fingers, the jSax includes a set of plugs, referred to as 'training wheels'. These can be used to help seal the tone holes, making it easier to produce clear notes during the initial learning phase. Insert these plugs into the tone holes as needed.

Operating Instructions

1. Holding the Instrument

Hold the jSax comfortably with your left hand positioned towards the top keys and your right hand towards the bottom keys. Ensure your fingers are curved and relaxed, ready to cover the tone holes or press the keys.

2. Producing Sound (Embouchure)

Place the mouthpiece in your mouth with your top teeth resting on the top of the mouthpiece and your bottom lip slightly rolled over your bottom teeth, pressing gently against the reed. Form a firm but relaxed embouchure (mouth shape) around the mouthpiece. Blow a steady stream of air into the instrument to make the reed vibrate and produce sound. Experiment with the amount of mouthpiece in your mouth and the firmness of your embouchure to find the optimal sound.

3. Fingering

The jSax utilizes traditional saxophone fingerings. It is fully chromatic from middle C to G in the next octave. Refer to a standard saxophone fingering chart for specific note positions. Ensure all tone holes are completely sealed by your fingertips to produce clear notes.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

The Nuvo jSax is 100% waterproof, making cleaning simple and hygienic. After each use, it is recommended to rinse the instrument with warm, soapy water to remove any moisture or debris. Ensure all parts are thoroughly dried before storage.

2. Reed Care

After playing, remove the reed from the mouthpiece and rinse it with water. Gently wipe it dry and store it in a reed case to prevent damage and prolong its lifespan. Replace reeds as they become worn or damaged.

Troubleshooting

1. No Sound or Squeaking

  • Reed Placement: Ensure the reed is correctly positioned on the mouthpiece and the ligature is tightened appropriately.
  • Embouchure: Adjust your mouth shape and air pressure. Too loose or too tight an embouchure can prevent sound production or cause squeaking.
  • Tone Hole Sealing: Make sure all open tone holes are completely sealed by your fingertips. Even a small leak can prevent notes from sounding correctly. Utilize the training wheel plugs if needed.
  • Reed Condition: Check if the reed is damaged or too soft/hard for your current skill level. Try a different reed if necessary.
