NUX NMP-2

NUX NMP-2 Dual Footswitch Instruction Manual

Model: NMP-2

1. Introduction

The NUX NMP-2 is a versatile dual footswitch designed to enhance control over various musical instruments and effects, including keyboards, modules, and effect pedals. This unit combines both latch-type and momentary-type switching functions, offering flexibility for different applications. Each of the two footswitches can be independently configured to operate in latch, open momentary, or close momentary modes.

2.1. Controls and Connections

  1. Foot Switch A: Activates or deactivates the function assigned to Jack A or the 'A' channel of Jack B&A.
  2. Foot Switch B: Activates or deactivates the function assigned to Jack B or the 'B' channel of Jack B&A.
  3. Foot Switch A Indicator: When set to latch mode, this indicator alternates between lit and unlit with each press. In momentary mode (open or close), it lights only while the footswitch is held down.
  4. Foot Switch B Indicator: Functions identically to the Foot Switch A indicator, reflecting the status of Foot Switch B.
  5. DC Jack (9V): Provides power to the unit, enabling the indicator lights and certain operational modes. Requires a 9V DC power supply with a 2.5mm plug, positive outside, negative inside.
  6. Jack A: Connects to devices controlled by Foot Switch A. Use a standard 1/4" (6.35mm) mono (TS) phone plug cable.
  7. Jack B&A: Connects to devices that can be controlled by both Foot Switch A and Foot Switch B simultaneously. Use a 1/4" (6.35mm) stereo (TRS) phone plug cable for dual control. If only Foot Switch B is desired, a mono (TS) cable can be used here.
  8. Mode Switch: A three-position switch (LATCH, OPEN, CLOSE) that determines the operational mode for both footswitches.

3. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your NMP-2 Dual Footswitch.

3.1. Power Connection

The NMP-2 requires a 9V DC power supply to activate its indicator lights and certain operational modes. Connect a 9V DC adapter (positive outside, negative inside, 2.5mm plug) to the DC Jack. The unit can function passively in some modes without external power, but indicator lights will not operate.

3.2. Connecting to Devices

  • Single Footswitch Control (Jack A): Use a 1/4" (6.35mm) mono (TS) cable to connect Jack A on the NMP-2 to the footswitch input of your device. Foot Switch A will control this connection.
  • Single Footswitch Control (Jack B): If your device has a dedicated input for a single footswitch B, use a 1/4" (6.35mm) mono (TS) cable to connect Jack B&A on the NMP-2 to your device. In this configuration, only Foot Switch B will be active via the TS connection.
  • Dual Footswitch Control (Jack B&A): For devices that support dual footswitch control via a single stereo input, use a 1/4" (6.35mm) stereo (TRS) cable to connect Jack B&A on the NMP-2 to your device. Foot Switch A will control one function (typically Tip), and Foot Switch B will control another (typically Ring). Consult your device's manual for specific TRS footswitch assignments.

4. Operating Instructions

The NMP-2 offers three distinct operational modes, selectable via the Mode Switch.

4.1. Mode Selection

The Mode Switch on the rear panel allows you to choose between LATCH, OPEN, and CLOSE modes. This setting applies to both footswitches A and B.

  • LATCH Mode: In this mode, each press of a footswitch toggles its state (on/off). The corresponding indicator light will turn on with the first press and off with the second. This is suitable for functions like channel switching or effect bypass that require a persistent state change.
  • OPEN (Momentary) Mode: In this momentary mode, the footswitch sends a signal only while it is held down. The indicator light will be on only while the switch is pressed. This is often used for functions like tap tempo or sustain.
  • CLOSE (Momentary) Mode: Similar to OPEN mode, this is a momentary action. The specific behavior (normally open vs. normally closed) depends on the connected device's requirements. The indicator light will be on only while the switch is pressed.

Always refer to the instruction manual of the device you are connecting the NMP-2 to, as different devices may interpret these modes or require specific cable types (TS or TRS) for optimal functionality.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your NMP-2 Dual Footswitch, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
  • Handling: While built for durability, avoid dropping the unit or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Power Supply: Always use a compatible 9V DC power supply with the correct polarity (positive outside, negative inside) to prevent damage.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your NMP-2 Dual Footswitch, consult the following common troubleshooting points:

  • No Indicator Lights: Ensure the 9V DC power supply is correctly connected to the DC Jack and is functioning. Verify the power supply meets the specified voltage and polarity (9V, positive outside, negative inside).
  • Footswitch Not Responding:
    • Check the cable connections. Ensure cables are fully inserted and are the correct type (TS or TRS) for your application and the connected device's requirements.
    • Verify the Mode Switch setting (LATCH, OPEN, CLOSE) matches the expected behavior for your connected device.
    • Test with a different cable to rule out a faulty cable.
  • Indicator Lights and Footswitch Out of Sync (Requires two presses for action): If the unit is powered via the DC input and the indicator lights turn on/off on the first press, but the actual function on the connected device only activates on the second press, this indicates a specific operational characteristic. If this behavior is undesirable, consider using the NMP-2 without external power (if the connected device supports passive switching) or consult the NUX support for further assistance.
  • Incorrect Functionality with Dual Control (Jack B&A): Ensure you are using a stereo (TRS) cable for dual control. A mono (TS) cable will only activate Foot Switch B when connected to Jack B&A.
