Setup and Blade Sharpening

Proper setup and a sharp blade are crucial for optimal performance of your smoothing plane. The blade requires sharpening prior to initial use.

Blade Sharpening Procedure

  1. Remove the blade by turning the brass thumbscrew anti-clockwise on the iron cap (also known as the lever cap).
  2. Unscrew the cap iron screw until loose and separate the cap iron from the blade.
  3. The blade is supplied with a ground angle of 25°. It should be honed to 30°.
  4. Lubricate a flat oil stone with thin machine oil. Place the 25° bevel flat on the stone, then raise the blade 5° to achieve the 30° honing angle.
  5. Sharpen the blade using a figure-of-eight movement to ensure even wear distribution.
  6. Once a burr forms at the edge, turn the blade over. Reposition the cutter to lie flat against the oil stone with the bevel facing up. Gently sharpen to remove the burr.
  7. Ensure the cap iron is parallel to the blade, then re-attach it to the blade and tighten the cap iron screw.
  8. Place the re-assembled blade into the plane body and secure the lever back into position.

Operation

Using the smoothing plane effectively requires attention to blade adjustment and planing technique.

Quick Tips for Use

  • The brass adjusting nut controls the depth of cut. Turn it to achieve the desired shaving thickness.
  • For planing softwood, position the cap iron approximately 2mm back from the cutting edge.
  • For planing hardwood, set the cap iron as close as possible to the cutting edge.

Best Practices for Planing

  • Aim for minimal shaving thickness for a smooth finish.
  • Ensure the plane base remains aligned with the workpiece throughout the stroke.
  • Apply pressure to the front of the plane at the start of the stroke, gradually shifting pressure towards the heel of the plane as you complete the stroke.
  • Lift the plane from the workpiece at the end of each cutting stroke before beginning the next.
  • Always plane in the direction of the wood grain. When planing end grain, work from the edge towards the middle.
  • If needed, rub candle wax into the base of the plane to reduce friction and improve ease of movement.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and consistent performance of your smoothing plane.

Product Care Guidelines

  • Always keep the blade sharp. Oil all metal parts when the plane is not in use to prevent corrosion.
  • Do not use other metal objects to clear wood shavings from the plane, as this can damage components.
  • When storing the plane, lay it on its side to protect the blade from damage.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues that may arise during the use of your smoothing plane.

  • Plane not cutting or cutting unevenly: Ensure the blade is sharp and properly honed. Check that the blade is correctly seated and the cap iron is parallel. Verify the depth of cut adjustment.
  • Rough finish: This often indicates a dull blade, incorrect blade projection, or planing against the wood grain. Re-sharpen the blade and adjust the depth of cut. Always plane with the grain.
  • Plane sticking or difficult to push: The sole of the plane may need lubrication. Apply a thin layer of candle wax to the base to reduce friction.
