General Chain Saw Safety

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear. Consider leg protection (chaps) and a hard hat.
  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate chain saws in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Keep bystanders, children, and pets at a safe distance.
  • Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
  • Chain Saw Specific Risks: Be aware of kickback, which can occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Maintain a firm grip with both hands.
  • Battery Safety: Use only the battery pack specified by the manufacturer. Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer.

3.2 Guide Bar and Chain Assembly

  1. Place the chain saw on a stable, flat surface.
  2. Remove the chain cover by loosening the retaining knob.
  3. Carefully place the saw chain around the drive sprocket and then into the groove of the guide bar. Ensure the cutting edges of the chain are facing the correct direction (refer to the arrow on the guide bar).
  4. Position the guide bar onto the chain saw, ensuring the guide bar studs pass through the holes in the guide bar.
  5. Replace the chain cover and lightly tighten the retaining knob, allowing for chain tension adjustment.

3.3 Chain Tension Adjustment

  1. With the chain cover lightly tightened, use the chain tensioning knob to adjust the chain tension.
  2. The chain is correctly tensioned when it can be pulled away from the guide bar by approximately 2-3 mm at the center, and the chain links are snug against the guide bar.
  3. Once tension is correct, fully tighten the chain cover retaining knob.
  4. Periodically check chain tension during operation, especially when the chain is new, as it may stretch.

4.2 Cutting Techniques

  • Maintain Balance: Always stand with good footing and balance.
  • Avoid Kickback: Never cut with the tip of the guide bar. Always use the bottom or top edge of the guide bar.
  • Cutting Small Branches: Support the branch to prevent it from pinching the chain.
  • Felling Trees: This operation requires advanced training and should only be performed by experienced users. Always plan escape routes and ensure no one is in the felling zone.
  • Limbing: Work from the bottom up, supporting the branch to prevent pinching.

4.3 Stopping the Chain Saw

  1. Release the trigger switch.
  2. Engage the chain brake by pushing the front hand guard forward.
  3. Remove the battery pack when not in use or before performing any maintenance.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Ingco chain saw.

5.1 General Cleaning

  • After each use, remove the battery and clean the chain saw.
  • Use a brush or compressed air to remove sawdust, chips, and debris from the motor housing, guide bar, and chain.
  • Wipe down external surfaces with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals.

5.2 Chain Sharpening

  • A dull chain requires more force to cut and increases the risk of kickback. Sharpen the chain regularly or replace it when necessary.
  • Refer to the chain manufacturer's specifications for the correct file size and sharpening angles.
  • Alternatively, have the chain professionally sharpened.

5.3 Guide Bar Maintenance

  • Clean the guide bar groove regularly to remove sawdust and debris.
  • Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.

5.4 Battery Care

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not store batteries in a discharged state for extended periods.
  • Use only the specified charger for your Ingco 20V Li-Ion battery.
