3. Setup

Battery Installation:

The KA900 uses a built-in 18650 rechargeable lithium-ion battery. To access the battery compartment, locate the battery cover on the underside of the radio. Open the cover and ensure the 18650 cell is properly seated. While the included battery provides basic functionality, it can be upgraded to a higher quality 18650 cell for improved charge retention.

Charging the Radio:

  • Micro USB: Connect the included micro USB cable to the radio's micro USB port (located on the back panel) and to a 5V USB power source (adapter not included). The 'CHARGE' indicator light will illuminate.
  • Hand Crank: Extend the hand crank located on the side of the radio. Rotate the crank clockwise or counter-clockwise to generate power. Note that the crank design on this model is shorter and may require more effort compared to older models.
  • Solar Panel: Position the radio with the solar panel facing direct sunlight. The solar panel provides a trickle charge and is not intended as the primary charging method for significant power replenishment.

Charging External Devices:

The KA900 can act as a power bank. On the back panel, you will find a USB Type-A port and a USB Type-C port. To enable power output, locate the small switch near these ports and flip it to the 'OUT' position. Connect your mobile device using an appropriate USB cable. Note that the USB-C port is for outgoing power only and cannot be used to charge the radio itself.

4. Operating Instructions

Radio Operation:

  • Power On/Off: Press the power button to turn the radio on or off.
  • Band Selection: Use the dedicated buttons (AM/FM/SW, WBS) to switch between AM, FM, Shortwave, and NOAA Weather Bands.
  • Tuning: Use the tuning knob for manual frequency adjustment. For precise tuning, use the numerical keypad for direct frequency entry. The radio also supports Automatic Tuning System (ATS) and memory tuning for saving and recalling over 1,000 stations.
  • NOAA Weather Alert: To activate the NOAA Weather Alert mode, press the 'NOAA ALERT' button. The display will show 'ALERT'. In this mode, the radio will remain silent but will automatically activate and broadcast when it receives an alert signal from NOAA weather stations. Note that while in alert mode, other audio sources (like Bluetooth music) will not play.

MP3 Player and Recorder:

  • MP3 Playback: Insert a micro-SD memory card (up to 32 GB) containing MP3, WAV, or WMA audio files into the designated slot. Use the 'RADIO/MP3' button to switch to MP3 mode. Navigate tracks using the playback controls. The radio features a built-in digital sound equalizer.
  • Recording: The radio includes a built-in microphone for voice recording. Refer to the on-screen menu for recording functions.

Bluetooth Connectivity:

Press the Bluetooth button to enter Bluetooth pairing mode. The radio will appear as 'Kaito' on your device's Bluetooth list. Pair your smartphone or tablet to stream audio wirelessly through the radio's speakers. As noted, Bluetooth audio will be interrupted if the radio is in NOAA Alert mode and an alert is received.

Lighting Functions:

  • Reading Lamp: Lift the solar panel to reveal the 5-LED reading lamp.
  • Flashlight: The powerful LED flashlight is located on the side of the radio. Use the dedicated switch to turn it on/off.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the radio's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Care: For optimal battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. If the included 18650 battery's performance degrades, it can be replaced with a higher quality equivalent.
  • Storage: Store the radio in a cool, dry place. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures (above 140°F / 60°C), as this can damage the unit and battery.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Radio not turning on/holding charge: Ensure the battery is properly installed and fully charged. Consider replacing the 18650 battery with a higher quality one if charge retention is poor.
  • Difficulty with hand crank: The hand crank on this model is designed to be compact. Apply steady, consistent rotation. It is primarily for emergency power generation, not continuous use.
  • Solar panel not charging effectively: The solar panel provides a supplemental charge. It requires direct sunlight and is not designed for rapid or full charging.
  • No audio in NOAA Alert mode: This is normal operation. The radio mutes other audio to listen for alerts. It will activate and broadcast when an alert is issued.
  • Menu navigation is difficult: The menu system uses the tuning dial for scrolling and the 'MENU' button for selection. Familiarize yourself with the short press and long press functions of various buttons as they often serve multiple purposes.
  • Poor radio reception: Extend the telescopic antenna fully. For shortwave, an external clip-on antenna (not included) can be attached to the telescopic antenna for improved reception.
  • Unit damaged by weather/temperature: This radio does not have an IP rating and is not waterproof. Avoid exposing it to rain, excessive moisture, or extreme temperatures, especially above 140°F (60°C).
