1. Introduction
The Hunter Hydrawise HCC-800-PL is a sophisticated Wi-Fi enabled irrigation controller designed for efficient water management in residential, commercial, and public-sector landscapes. This controller integrates with the Hydrawise platform, allowing for remote management and automatic, weather-based adjustments to irrigation schedules. The base unit supports 8 stations and is expandable up to 38 stations with optional ICM modules.
2. Setup and Installation
2.1 Mounting the Controller
Select a suitable indoor or outdoor location for mounting the controller. Ensure it is protected from direct sunlight and extreme weather conditions. The unit is designed to be mounted securely to a wall.
2.2 Power Connection
The HCC-800-PL supports dual voltage (120V / 230V) for domestic and international use. Connect the appropriate power supply to the controller's power input terminals. Ensure all connections are secure and comply with local electrical codes.
2.3 Wiring Stations and Sensors
Connect your irrigation zone valves to the numbered station terminals (1-8 for the base unit). Connect the common wire from your valves to the 'C' terminal. The controller also provides terminals for sensors (SEN 1, SEN 2, SEN C), a pump/master valve (P/MV), and remote control (REM).

Figure 1: Internal view of the Hunter Hydrawise HCC-800-PL Wi-Fi Irrigation Controller. This image displays the main wiring terminals for stations, common, sensors, and power. It also shows the slots for optional expansion modules and the internal transformer. Instructions for connecting station modules are visible on the inside of the door.
2.4 Connecting Station Modules
The HCC-800-PL can be expanded from 8 stations up to 38 stations using optional ICM modules (4-, 8-, or 22-station output modules). To install a module:
- Tip the module into an available slot.
- Ensure the lever is up for left-side modules and down for right-side modules.
- Close the lever to secure the module.
- After installing modules, press the Reset button (located below the module connection instructions) to ensure the controller recognizes the new modules.
2.5 Wi-Fi Connection
The controller is Wi-Fi enabled for connection to the Hydrawise software. Follow the instructions provided in the Hydrawise app or web interface to connect your controller to your local Wi-Fi network. This enables remote programming and monitoring.
2.6 SmartPort Compatibility
The HCC-800-PL features a pre-wired SmartPort, making it compatible with Hunter's ROAM and ROAM XL remotes for manual operation in the field without requiring a smartphone.
3. Operating the Controller
3.1 Hydrawise Software
All programming and scheduling are managed through the Hydrawise web-based platform or the Hydrawise mobile application (available for iOS and Android devices). This allows for creating custom watering schedules, setting up weather-based adjustments, and monitoring system performance remotely.
3.2 Simultaneous Operation
The HCC controller is capable of operating any two stations simultaneously, which can be configured within the Hydrawise software.
3.3 Flow Meter Integration
For enhanced water management, an optional HC Flow Meter can be installed. This allows for accurate flow monitoring, detection of leaks, and prevention of water waste. Flow data is accessible through the Hydrawise platform.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Wire Fault Detection
The HCC-800-PL features a built-in milliamp sensor that continuously monitors the wiring for faults. If a fault is detected, the system will generate an alert through the Hydrawise platform, aiding in quick troubleshooting and repair.
4.2 General Care
Keep the controller's exterior clean and free from dust and debris. Ensure the enclosure remains sealed to protect internal components from moisture and pests. Periodically check all wiring connections for tightness and signs of wear.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1 Station Not Activating
- Check Wiring: Verify that the station wire and common wire are securely connected to the correct terminals.
- Milliamp Sensor: Consult the Hydrawise app for any wire fault alerts reported by the built-in milliamp sensor.
- Valve Check: Manually test the valve at the solenoid to ensure it is functioning correctly.
5.2 Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues
- Router Proximity: Ensure the controller is within range of your Wi-Fi router.
- Network Settings: Verify your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password are correct in the Hydrawise setup.
- Power Cycle: Try power cycling both your Wi-Fi router and the irrigation controller.
5.3 Expansion Module Not Recognized
- Secure Connection: Ensure the expansion module is fully seated and its lever is correctly engaged.
- Reset Button: Press the Reset button on the controller after installing new modules.
- Module Compatibility: Verify that the installed module is compatible with the HCC series.
