ProTemp 140,000 BTU Kerosene/Diesel Forced Air Torpedo Heater

Model: PT-140T-KFA - Instruction Manual

Introduction

This manual contains important information for the safe assembly, operation, and maintenance of your ProTemp 140,000 BTU Kerosene/Diesel Forced Air Torpedo Heater. Read all instructions and safety warnings carefully before operating this heater. Failure to follow these instructions may result in fire, explosion, injury, or death. Keep this manual for future reference.

This heater is designed for use in well-ventilated areas such as construction sites, warehouses, barns, and outdoor events. It is not intended for residential use or in poorly ventilated enclosed spaces due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Important Safety Information

  • Ventilation: Always ensure adequate ventilation when operating this heater. Provide at least a 3 square foot (0.28 sq meter) opening of fresh air for every 100,000 BTU/Hr of heater output. This heater requires fresh air for safe operation and to prevent carbon monoxide accumulation.
  • Fuel: Use only K-1 kerosene, #1 or #2 diesel fuel, or JP-8/Jet A fuel. Never use gasoline, crankcase drainings, or any other volatile fuels, as this can cause fire or explosion.
  • Clearances: Maintain minimum clearances from combustible materials: Front: 8 feet (2.4 m), Sides: 2 feet (0.6 m), Top: 6 feet (1.8 m).
  • Placement: Place the heater on a level, stable, non-combustible surface. Do not operate the heater in areas where gasoline or other flammable vapors or liquids are stored.
  • Electrical: Connect the heater to a properly grounded 120V AC outlet. Do not use ungrounded adapters or modify the plug. Ensure the extension cord, if used, is rated for the heater's power requirements and is in good condition.
  • Operation: Never leave the heater unattended while operating. Do not move, handle, or refuel the heater while it is hot or running.
  • Children and Animals: Keep children and animals away from the heater.
  • Carbon Monoxide: This heater produces carbon monoxide, which is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause death. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, and flu-like symptoms. If these symptoms occur, get fresh air immediately.

Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the heater from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Report any damage immediately to your dealer.
  2. Assembly: This heater requires minor assembly, typically involving attaching the wheels and handle. Refer to the included assembly diagram for detailed instructions. Ensure all fasteners are securely tightened.

  3. Placement: Position the heater on a firm, level surface. Ensure the heater is at least 8 feet from the front of any combustible materials and 2 feet from the sides and top.
  4. Fueling: Fill the fuel tank with K-1 kerosene, #1 or #2 diesel fuel, or JP-8/Jet A fuel. Do not overfill. Ensure the fuel cap is securely fastened to prevent leaks. The tank capacity is approximately 14 gallons.
  5. Electrical Connection: Plug the heater into a standard 120V AC, 60 Hz, grounded electrical outlet. If an extension cord is necessary, use a 3-prong grounded cord rated for outdoor use and capable of handling the heater's electrical load (minimum 14 AWG for cords up to 50 feet).

Operating Instructions

  1. Pre-Operation Check: Before starting, ensure the fuel tank has sufficient fuel, the power cord is securely plugged in, and all safety clearances are maintained. Verify adequate ventilation is present.
  2. Starting the Heater:
    • Turn the main power switch to the "ON" position.
    • The heater will initiate its ignition sequence. This typically involves the fan starting, followed by the igniter, and then the flame.
    • The heater should ignite within a few seconds.
  3. Adjusting Temperature: The heater is equipped with a thermostat control knob. Rotate the knob to set the desired temperature. The heater will cycle on and off automatically to maintain the set temperature.

  4. Stopping the Heater: To turn off the heater, simply turn the main power switch to the "OFF" position. The heater will undergo a cool-down cycle before completely shutting down. Do not unplug the heater during the cool-down cycle.
  5. Refueling: Always turn off the heater and allow it to cool completely before refueling.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your ProTemp heater. Always disconnect the heater from the power supply before performing any maintenance.

  • Daily: Inspect the heater for any visible damage, loose connections, or fuel leaks. Ensure the area around the heater is clear of obstructions.
  • Weekly/Every 50 Hours of Operation:
    • Clean Air Filter: The intake air filter should be washed and dried. A clogged filter can affect combustion efficiency.
Close-up of the pressure gauge and intake filter area
Close-up of the pressure gauge (PSI/BAR) and the surrounding area, indicating the location of the intake filter for maintenance.
    • Check Fuel Filter: Inspect the fuel filter for debris. Clean or replace if necessary.
    • Nozzle Cleaning: If the heater produces excessive smoke or soot, the fuel nozzle may be dirty and require cleaning or replacement.
  • Seasonal Storage: Before storing the heater for an extended period, drain all fuel from the tank. Clean the exterior and interior components. Store in a dry, safe location.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Heater does not start or ignite. No power, no fuel, clogged fuel filter, faulty igniter. Check power connection and circuit breaker. Ensure adequate fuel. Clean or replace fuel filter. Consult service technician for igniter issues.
Heater starts but flames out quickly. Insufficient fuel, dirty fuel nozzle, low air pressure, inadequate ventilation. Check fuel level. Clean fuel nozzle. Inspect air intake and fan for obstructions. Ensure proper ventilation. An adjustment screw for fuel pressure may need calibration (consult manual for specific model adjustment).
Excessive smoke or strong odor. Improper fuel, dirty fuel nozzle, clogged air filter, poor combustion. Ensure correct fuel type is used. Clean fuel nozzle and air filter. Verify adequate ventilation.
Heater runs but produces little heat. Low fuel pressure, incorrect thermostat setting. Check fuel level and fuel pressure. Adjust thermostat to a higher setting.
Error code displayed. Internal fault, sensor issue, or specific operational problem. Refer to the specific error code section in the full product manual (if available) or contact customer support. Often, turning the unit off and on can reset minor errors.
