Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your RetraxPRO XR Tonneau Cover. Please follow these steps carefully.

1. Unpacking and Preparation

Carefully unpack all components from the box. Do not remove any protective films until after the installation is complete. Ensure all parts listed in the 'What's in the Box' section are present.

2. Removing Shipping Materials

Remove the shipping screws, shipping brackets, and white shipping tubes from both sides of the canister. Save one shipping bracket for later use as a shim during rail adjustment.

3. Installing Rails to Canister

Pull 6 to 8 inches of the rolling cover out of the canister. While holding onto the cover to prevent it from rolling back up, guide the cover into the rail channel. Position the rails into the canister spirals. Align the front and rear rail attachment tabs and holes to the inside of the corresponding canister holes. Attach the rails with the two 10-32 x 7/16 inch mounting screws. Repeat this process for the other side.

4. Attaching Front Cover

The front cover attaches through the top of the rail. Attach it with the two 10-24 x 3/4 inch screws.

5. Positioning the Cover on the Truck Bed

With the help of another person, lift the cover assembly and place the front seal on the bulkhead. Ensure the seal lays forward and flat, not extending past the bed rail cap.

6. Installing Bed Rail Clamps

Use the saved shipping bracket as a spacer to adjust the distance between the rails and the tailgate. Position the clamps between the rail adjustment screws, ensuring the top jaw of the clamp is tucked firmly to the top and inside corner of the sheet metal bed flange. Tighten the clamps using a 9/16 inch or 1/2 inch wrench. It's important to push down and tilt the rail up approximately 2 degrees while simultaneously tightening the clamps. This helps minimize water intrusion. Do this at both the front and back of the truck bed.

7. Adjusting Rail Parallelism

Measure the distance between the rails above the cover at three points: front, middle, and rear. It's important that the rails are parallel, with a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 of an inch. If the rails are not parallel, remove the clamp and turn the white adjustment screws with a 6mm Allen wrench. Each turn is 1/16 of an inch. Turn counter-clockwise if rails are too close, clockwise if too far apart.

8. Installing Drain Tubes

Remove all protective film from the canister. Insert the drain tube at the bottom of the canister, then rotate clockwise until it snaps into place. Route the opposite ends of the drain tube to an existing drain hole in the truck bed. If no suitable drain hole exists, you may need to drill one.

9. Final Checks

Check the cover's operation. Make sure it isn't binding and is rolling smoothly. If not, go back and make further adjustments. Ensure the tailgate opens and closes properly without binding the cover.

Operating Instructions

To operate your RetraxPRO XR cover:

  • To Open: Open the lock cover and press the button at the center of the latch. This will pop open the handle. Gently pull the cover towards the tailgate to open.
  • To Close: Pull the cover towards the cab until it fully extends.
  • To Lock: Push firmly down on the end of the lock handle until it latches. Insert the key and turn until it is locked. The cover can be locked in any position along the rails.

Maintenance

The RetraxPRO XR features stainless steel, maintenance-free ball bearings. Do not use any lubricants in the rails, as this can mess up the seal on the ball bearings and void your warranty. Lubricants are not necessary for smooth operation.

Allow 24 to 48 hours for the cover to fully break in. During this period, the seals will wear in and form a memory, which may initially make opening and closing the cover slightly more difficult.

Troubleshooting

  • Minor Leaks: Some users have reported minor leaks during heavy rain. Ensure all seals are properly seated and the drain tubes are clear and correctly installed.
  • Tailgate Button Interference: If the cover inhibits the tailgate push button, try adjusting the cover's position slightly to ensure proper clearance.
  • Stiff Operation: New seals may cause the cover to be stiff for the first few days. This is normal as the seals wear in and form a memory. Avoid using lubricants.
