1. Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Hydronix RO Reverse Osmosis Replacement Pre-Filters. This 3-pack includes one 5-micron sediment filter and two 5-micron carbon block filters, designed for universal fit in standard 4 or 5 stage RO and drinking water systems. These filters are NSF Certified and are intended to reduce chlorine taste and odor, as well as fine particles such as sediment, sand, silt, soil, and rust.
2. Product Overview
The Hydronix RO Replacement Pre-Filters are essential components for maintaining the efficiency and water quality of your reverse osmosis system. Each filter measures 2.5 inches in diameter and 10 inches in height, ensuring compatibility with most standard systems.
- Sediment Filter (1 included): A 5-micron filter designed to remove larger particles like dirt, rust, and sand, protecting subsequent filters.
- Carbon Block Filters (2 included): Two 5-micron filters made from high-purity NSF Certified coconut carbon, effective in reducing chlorine, bad tastes, and odors.

3. Setup and Installation
Follow these general steps to replace the pre-filters in your RO system. Always refer to your specific RO system's manual for detailed instructions, as procedures may vary.
- Turn Off Water Supply: Locate the cold water supply valve to your RO system and turn it off.
- Depressurize System: Open the RO faucet to relieve pressure from the system. Allow water to drain completely.
- Remove Filter Housings: Use a filter wrench (if provided with your RO system) to unscrew the pre-filter housings. Place a towel or bucket underneath to catch any residual water.
- Remove Old Filters: Discard the old sediment and carbon block filters.
- Clean Housings: Clean the inside of the filter housings with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Inspect and replace O-rings if they are damaged or worn. Lubricate O-rings with food-grade silicone grease if necessary.
- Insert New Filters: Place the new filters into their respective housings. Ensure the sediment filter is in the first stage housing and the carbon block filters are in the subsequent pre-filter stages.
- Screw on Housings: Hand-tighten the filter housings back onto the system. Do not overtighten.
- Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the cold water supply valve. Check for leaks.
- Flush System: Open the RO faucet and allow the system to flush for at least 10-15 minutes to remove any carbon fines or air from the new filters. Close the faucet and allow the storage tank to fill completely before using the water.
4. Operating Instructions
Once installed, the Hydronix pre-filters operate continuously as part of your RO system. The sediment filter acts as the first line of defense, capturing larger particles to prevent clogging of the carbon filters and the RO membrane. The carbon block filters then remove chlorine and other chemicals that can damage the RO membrane and affect water taste and odor. No user interaction is required during normal operation beyond scheduled maintenance.
5. Maintenance
Regular replacement of your pre-filters is crucial for optimal performance of your RO system and to ensure continued high-quality water. The expected lifespan of these filters is 4 to 6 months or 3000 gallons, whichever comes first. Filter life may vary based on local water conditions and usage patterns.
Failure to replace filters on schedule can lead to:
- Reduced water flow from your RO faucet.
- Decreased effectiveness in removing contaminants.
- Potential damage to the RO membrane, leading to costly repairs.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced water flow after filter replacement | Air trapped in the system; filters not properly flushed; clogged filters (if water quality is very poor). | Ensure system is fully flushed (10-15 minutes); check for kinks in tubing; if problem persists, inspect filters for damage or premature clogging. |
| Unusual taste or odor in water | New carbon filters need flushing; expired carbon filters; improper installation. | Flush the system thoroughly; ensure filters are installed correctly; replace filters if they are past their recommended lifespan. |
| Leaks around filter housings | Housings not tightened correctly; damaged or improperly seated O-rings. | Ensure housings are hand-tightened securely; inspect O-rings for damage and proper seating; apply food-grade silicone grease to O-rings. |
