4. Installation & Assembly

4.1 Blade Mounting

The generator shaft has a diameter of 1/8" (3mm) and includes a flat spot for attaching the blade. Ensure your blade(s) are press-fit firmly onto the generator's shaft. If your blade is not press-fit on, there is a chance it could fly off. Blades flying off are a safety hazard and should be dealt with in a serious way. We recommend a #4 set screw to fasten the blade securely to the flat spot on the shaft.

4.2 Wiring

The generator features two 3/16 spade terminals for power connection. The positive terminal is marked with a red dot, and the negative terminal is unmarked. This polarity configuration applies when blades rotate counter-clockwise (viewing from the front of the generator). If your blade rotates clockwise, you must connect positive to the unmarked terminal and negative to the red terminal.

5. Operating Principles

5.1 Generator Theory

This Mini Wind Turbine DC Generator is essentially a modified DC brushed motor. It has been specifically designed by Cutting Edge Power to meet the unique requirements of wind turbine applications, focusing on:

  • Optimized for Low RPMs: Designed to develop critical voltages that wind turbines need at low RPMs by altering the number and size of the copper windings internally.
  • Vibration Resistance: Engineered to handle the high vibrations that mini wind turbines are subjected to, utilizing special weather-resistant bearings on the front and rear shaft.

5.2 Open Circuit Voltage

Open circuit voltage is the measured voltage of a circuit with no load (no current). For this generator, the open circuit voltage typically varies between 0-36V DC, depending on factors such as wind speed, blade type, blade quantity, blade size, and turbine installation height.

It is important to note that open circuit voltage only tells half the story. When the generator is connected to a battery for charging, the output voltage will be "clamped" down close to the battery voltage. For example, if a generator produces an open circuit voltage of 30V DC but is connected to a battery with a voltage of 11.9V, the generator output voltage will be clamped down to approximately 12.0V.

It is normal and desirable to have the generator's output voltage clamped down close to the battery voltage. This allows the maximum amount of charging current. However, if the turbine output is too high for the size of your battery, it can damage the battery. In such cases, a charge controller is recommended.

5.3 Blocking Diode

When charging a battery with this generator, you must use a blocking diode. Without a blocking diode, upon hooking up the generator to the battery, it will immediately start spinning like a fan, discharging the battery.

Similar to a one-way valve in hydraulic systems, a blocking diode only allows current flow in one direction. The positive end of a diode is called the anode, and the negative end is called the cathode. Current can flow from the anode end to the cathode, but not the other direction.

When installing with our mini wind turbine generator, install the diode in the positive (+) wire with the white band oriented toward the battery.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your generator, regular inspection and basic maintenance are recommended:

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically check the generator for any signs of physical damage, loose connections, or wear.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the generator free from dust, dirt, and debris, which can impede performance or cause overheating.
  • Mounting Security: Ensure that the generator and its associated turbine components are securely mounted and that all fasteners are tight to prevent excessive vibration.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your generator, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • Generator is Hard to Rotate: This generator is designed to be robust. If it feels unusually stiff or does not rotate freely, check for any physical obstructions or binding in the shaft or bearings. Ensure proper alignment if part of a larger assembly.
  • No Power Output:
    • Verify all electrical connections are secure and correctly wired (positive to red dot, negative to unmarked terminal for counter-clockwise rotation).
    • Ensure the blocking diode is installed correctly in the positive wire with the white band facing the battery.
    • Confirm that the generator is rotating at a sufficient speed to produce voltage (e.g., 1000 rpm for 12V output). Check wind conditions and blade efficiency.
  • Generator Spins but Does Not Charge Battery: This often indicates an issue with the blocking diode or battery connection. Re-check diode polarity and ensure good contact with the battery terminals.
