1. Introduction
The Sealey SMS01 Drill Bit Sharpener Grinding Attachment is designed to provide quick and precise sharpening for High-Speed Steel (HSS) twist drill bits. This attachment is compatible with any standard bench grinder, making it a versatile tool for workshops and garages. It features an angle gauge with multiple pre-set angles to ensure accurate sharpening for various drill bit types.
2. Safety Instructions
Always adhere to the following safety guidelines when using the drill bit sharpener attachment:
- Read the Manual: Before operation, thoroughly read and understand this instruction manual and the manual for your bench grinder.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate eye protection (safety glasses or goggles) and hearing protection. Gloves are recommended to protect hands.
- Secure Workpiece: Ensure the drill bit is securely clamped in the attachment before sharpening.
- Stable Setup: Confirm that the bench grinder is securely mounted and stable. The attachment should also be firmly positioned.
- Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling grinding dust.
- Clear Work Area: Keep the work area clean and free from clutter.
- Power Disconnection: Disconnect the bench grinder from the power supply before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or performing maintenance.
- Avoid Overheating: Do not apply excessive pressure, which can cause the drill bit to overheat and lose its temper. Allow the bit to cool if it becomes too hot.
- Inspect Before Use: Check the attachment and bench grinder for any damage or wear before each use. Do not use if damaged.
- Children and Bystanders: Keep children and bystanders away from the operating area.

The angle adjustment mechanism is visible on the upper part of the device.
5. Setup
Follow these steps to set up the SMS01 attachment with your bench grinder:
- Bench Grinder Preparation: Ensure your bench grinder is clean, stable, and securely mounted to a workbench. Verify that the grinding wheels are in good condition and properly installed.
- Adjust Tool Rest: Position the bench grinder's tool rest so that it is flat and level with the center of the grinding wheel. The SMS01 attachment will rest on this surface.
- Position the Attachment: Place the base of the SMS01 attachment firmly on the bench grinder's tool rest. Ensure it is stable and does not wobble.
- Select Angle: Use the integrated angle gauge on the attachment to select the desired sharpening angle (e.g., 59° for general-purpose drilling). Adjust the attachment's angle mechanism accordingly.
- Insert Drill Bit: Loosen the clamping screws on the attachment. Insert the HSS twist drill bit into the V-groove of the attachment, ensuring it is seated firmly and extends sufficiently for sharpening.
- Secure Drill Bit: Tighten the clamping screws to firmly hold the drill bit in place. Ensure the drill bit is straight and aligned with the V-groove.
- Initial Alignment: With the bench grinder off, carefully bring the drill bit, held by the attachment, close to the grinding wheel to check the alignment and ensure the desired angle will be achieved. Adjust the tool rest or attachment position as needed.
6. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for effective drill bit sharpening:
- Wear PPE: Always wear safety glasses/goggles and hearing protection before starting the grinder.
- Start Grinder: Turn on the bench grinder and allow it to reach full operating speed.
- Grind First Flute: Gently bring the drill bit, held by the attachment, into contact with the grinding wheel. Apply light, consistent pressure. The attachment's design will guide the drill bit at the pre-set angle. Grind one flute until a sharp edge is formed. Avoid excessive pressure to prevent overheating.
- Cooling: If the drill bit becomes hot, remove it from the grinding wheel and allow it to cool. You may use a cooling fluid or water, but ensure the bit is completely dry before resuming grinding.
- Rotate and Grind Second Flute: Utilize the rotating neck feature of the attachment. Rotate the drill bit 180 degrees within the attachment to present the second flute to the grinding wheel. Repeat the grinding process for the second flute, ensuring symmetry with the first.
- Check Sharpness: Periodically remove the drill bit and inspect its sharpness and symmetry. Both cutting edges should be sharp and of equal length.
- Deburr (Optional): After sharpening, lightly deburr the cutting edges if necessary using a fine abrasive stone or a very light touch on the grinding wheel.
- Power Off: Once sharpening is complete, turn off the bench grinder and allow the wheel to come to a complete stop before removing the drill bit and attachment.
7. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your SMS01 attachment:
- Cleaning: After each use, clean the attachment to remove grinding dust and debris. Use a brush or compressed air. Avoid using solvents that may damage the finish.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a light machine oil to any moving parts or pivot points to ensure smooth operation of the rotating neck and clamping mechanisms.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the attachment for signs of wear, damage, or loose fasteners. Tighten any loose screws. Replace any worn or damaged parts immediately.
- Storage: Store the attachment in a clean, dry place, away from moisture and corrosive materials, when not in use.
- Grinding Wheel Condition: Ensure your bench grinder's wheels are dressed and in good condition. A worn or uneven wheel will affect sharpening accuracy.
