5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up the SMS01 attachment with your bench grinder:

  1. Bench Grinder Preparation: Ensure your bench grinder is clean, stable, and securely mounted to a workbench. Verify that the grinding wheels are in good condition and properly installed.
  2. Adjust Tool Rest: Position the bench grinder's tool rest so that it is flat and level with the center of the grinding wheel. The SMS01 attachment will rest on this surface.
  3. Position the Attachment: Place the base of the SMS01 attachment firmly on the bench grinder's tool rest. Ensure it is stable and does not wobble.
  4. Select Angle: Use the integrated angle gauge on the attachment to select the desired sharpening angle (e.g., 59° for general-purpose drilling). Adjust the attachment's angle mechanism accordingly.
  5. Insert Drill Bit: Loosen the clamping screws on the attachment. Insert the HSS twist drill bit into the V-groove of the attachment, ensuring it is seated firmly and extends sufficiently for sharpening.
  6. Secure Drill Bit: Tighten the clamping screws to firmly hold the drill bit in place. Ensure the drill bit is straight and aligned with the V-groove.
  7. Initial Alignment: With the bench grinder off, carefully bring the drill bit, held by the attachment, close to the grinding wheel to check the alignment and ensure the desired angle will be achieved. Adjust the tool rest or attachment position as needed.

6. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for effective drill bit sharpening:

  1. Wear PPE: Always wear safety glasses/goggles and hearing protection before starting the grinder.
  2. Start Grinder: Turn on the bench grinder and allow it to reach full operating speed.
  3. Grind First Flute: Gently bring the drill bit, held by the attachment, into contact with the grinding wheel. Apply light, consistent pressure. The attachment's design will guide the drill bit at the pre-set angle. Grind one flute until a sharp edge is formed. Avoid excessive pressure to prevent overheating.
  4. Cooling: If the drill bit becomes hot, remove it from the grinding wheel and allow it to cool. You may use a cooling fluid or water, but ensure the bit is completely dry before resuming grinding.
  5. Rotate and Grind Second Flute: Utilize the rotating neck feature of the attachment. Rotate the drill bit 180 degrees within the attachment to present the second flute to the grinding wheel. Repeat the grinding process for the second flute, ensuring symmetry with the first.
  6. Check Sharpness: Periodically remove the drill bit and inspect its sharpness and symmetry. Both cutting edges should be sharp and of equal length.
  7. Deburr (Optional): After sharpening, lightly deburr the cutting edges if necessary using a fine abrasive stone or a very light touch on the grinding wheel.
  8. Power Off: Once sharpening is complete, turn off the bench grinder and allow the wheel to come to a complete stop before removing the drill bit and attachment.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your SMS01 attachment:
