1. Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of the EISCO Moving Coil DC Galvanometer, Model PH1084B (EDM-80). This instrument is designed for detecting electrical current in educational and laboratory settings.
The galvanometer features a 35-0-35 mV sensitivity with 1mV/Div, a clear acrylic front cover, and robust construction suitable for classroom demonstrations and experiments.
2. Safety Information
- Always ensure the device is used in a dry environment to prevent electrical hazards.
- Do not exceed the specified voltage or current ratings of the device.
- Handle with care to avoid damage to the delicate internal components.
- Keep out of reach of children unless under direct adult supervision.
- Inspect the device for any visible damage before each use.
3. Product Overview
The EISCO Moving Coil DC Galvanometer is a compact and durable instrument. Key features include:
- Measuring Range: 35-0-35 mV
- Sensitivity: 1mV/Div
- Display: Clear acrylic front cover with a 2.5" (60 mm) scale length.
- Terminals: Red (+) and Black (-) connection terminals.
- Adjustment: Zero adjustment screw.

4. Setup
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the galvanometer from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Placement: Place the galvanometer on a stable, level surface, away from strong magnetic fields or vibrations that could affect readings.
- Zero Adjustment: Before connecting any circuits, ensure the needle is aligned with the '0' mark on the scale. If not, use the small screw located below the meter face to adjust the needle to zero.

5. Operating Instructions
- Connecting the Circuit: Connect the positive (+) terminal of your circuit to the red terminal of the galvanometer. Connect the negative (-) terminal of your circuit to the black terminal of the galvanometer.
- Observing Readings: When current flows through the galvanometer, the needle will deflect. The direction of deflection indicates the direction of current flow. The magnitude of deflection corresponds to the current's strength, read against the mV scale.
- Interpreting the Scale: The scale is marked from 35-0-35 mV. Each major division represents 5 mV, and each minor division represents 1 mV. The sensitivity is 1mV/Div.
- Disconnecting: Always disconnect the circuit from the galvanometer when measurements are complete.
Note: This galvanometer is designed for DC (Direct Current) measurements only. Do not connect to AC (Alternating Current) sources.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the galvanometer with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the acrylic cover or housing.
- Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and strong magnetic fields. Keep it in its original packaging or a protective case when not in use.
- Inspection: Periodically check the connection terminals for corrosion or damage. Ensure the zero adjustment screw operates smoothly.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Needle does not move | No current in circuit; incorrect connection; damaged galvanometer. | Check circuit continuity and power source. Verify correct polarity. If still no movement, the device may be faulty. |
| Needle is off-center at rest | Zero adjustment required. | Use the zero adjustment screw to align the needle to '0'. |
| Inaccurate readings | External magnetic interference; damaged internal components. | Relocate the galvanometer away from magnetic sources. If problem persists, device may require professional service. |
