DollaTek PIC ICD2 PICKit 2 PICKIT 3 Universal Programmer Seat Instruction Manual

Model: PICKIT2 PICKIT3 | Brand: DollaTek

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper use and installation of the DollaTek PIC ICD2 PICKit 2 PICKIT 3 Universal Programmer Seat. This device is designed to facilitate the programming of various PIC microcontrollers using compatible programmers such as ICD2, PICKit 2, or PICKit 3. Please read these instructions carefully before use to ensure correct operation and to prevent damage to the device or microcontrollers.

Package Contents

  • 1 x DollaTek Universal Programmer Seat
  • 1 x USB Cable

Setup and Microcontroller Installation

The Universal Programmer Seat features a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket for easy installation and removal of microcontrollers. Proper alignment and jumper settings are crucial for successful programming.

  1. For 28-pin and 40-pin Microcontrollers:
    • Align the microcontroller to the left side of the ZIF socket, corresponding to the 28/40P (A) markings.
    • Place the short-circuit cap (jumper) on the position marked 'A'.
  2. For 8-pin, 14-pin, 18-pin, and 20-pin Microcontrollers:
    • Align the microcontroller to the left side of the ZIF socket, corresponding to the 8P/14P/18P/20P (B) markings.
    • Place the short-circuit cap (jumper) on the position marked 'B'.
  3. Connecting the Programmer:

Connect your external programmer (ICD2, PICKit 2, or PICKit 3) to the 6-pin block programming connection on the Universal Programmer Seat. Ensure the connection is secure and correctly oriented.

Important Note:

This Universal Programmer Seat is an adapter and does not contain programming functions itself. It requires an external programmer (e.g., PICKit 2, PICKit 3) to program the microcontroller chips.

Operating Instructions

Once the microcontroller is correctly installed in the ZIF socket and the external programmer is connected to the Universal Programmer Seat, you can proceed with the programming operation using your chosen programming software.

  • Refer to the specific instruction manual of your external programmer (ICD2, PICKit 2, or PICKit 3) for detailed steps on how to initiate and complete the programming process.
  • Ensure that the microcontroller type selected in your programming software matches the chip installed in the Universal Programmer Seat.
  • The seat supports the following PIC microcontroller series:
    • PIC16/18XX 40PIN Series devices (excluding 16F59)
    • PIC16/18XX 28PIN Series devices (excluding 16F57)
    • PIC16/18XX 18PIN Series devices
    • PIC 8PIN/14PIN/20PIN family of devices (excluding 10FXX)

Safety and Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and safe operation of your Universal Programmer Seat, please observe the following guidelines:

  • Handling: Always handle the device with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Environment: Keep the seat away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and liquids. Operate in a clean, dry environment.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the device. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Electrical Safety: When connecting or disconnecting components, ensure all power is off to prevent electrical damage. Always follow safety guidelines when handling electrical devices.
  • Assembly: Assembly may require tools and careful handling of electrical components.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues during the programming process, consider the following:

  • Microcontroller Alignment: Double-check that the microcontroller is correctly aligned in the ZIF socket and that the ZIF lever is fully closed.
  • Jumper Settings: Verify that the short-circuit cap (jumper) is placed on the correct position (A or B) corresponding to your microcontroller's pin count.
  • Programmer Connection: Ensure the external programmer is securely connected to the 6-pin header on the Universal Programmer Seat.
  • External Programmer Functionality: Confirm that your external programmer (ICD2, PICKit 2, PICKit 3) is functioning correctly and is properly configured with its software.
  • Microcontroller Compatibility: Ensure your microcontroller is listed as supported by both the Universal Programmer Seat and your external programmer.

For further assistance, refer to the documentation of your external programmer or contact DollaTek customer support.
