4. Setup

Setting up your Sonos Beam is a straightforward process, typically taking only a few minutes.

  1. Placement: Place the Sonos Beam on a flat, stable surface in front of your TV, or mount it to a wall using a compatible wall mount (sold separately). Ensure there are no obstructions directly in front of the sound bar.
  2. Connect Power: Connect the AC power cord to the Sonos Beam and then to a power outlet.
  3. Connect to TV (HDMI ARC): Locate the HDMI ARC port on your TV. It is usually labeled 'HDMI ARC' or 'HDMI eARC'. Connect one end of the provided HDMI cable to the HDMI ARC port on your TV and the other end to the HDMI port on the Sonos Beam. If your TV does not have an HDMI ARC port, use the included Optical Audio Adapter to connect the Beam to your TV's optical digital audio output.
  4. Download Sonos App: Download the Sonos app on your smartphone or tablet from your device's app store.
  5. Follow In-App Instructions: Open the Sonos app and follow the on-screen prompts to set up your new Sonos system. This includes connecting the Beam to your Wi-Fi network and configuring Amazon Alexa. For a more stable connection, you may connect the Ethernet cable from your router to the Beam's Ethernet port.

5. Operating Instructions

The Sonos Beam offers multiple ways to control your audio experience.

5.1. Voice Control (Amazon Alexa)

With Amazon Alexa built-in, you can control your Sonos Beam using voice commands. Simply say "Alexa" followed by your command. Examples include:

  • "Alexa, mute the sound bar."

To temporarily disable the microphone for privacy, press the microphone icon on the top of the Beam.

The Sonos app provides comprehensive control over your Sonos Beam and other Sonos products. Use the app to:

  • Browse and play music from various streaming services.
  • Adjust volume and audio settings (e.g., Bass Boost, Stereo Pairing).
  • Group the Beam with other Sonos speakers for multi-room audio.
  • Access Trueplay tuning (iOS devices only) for optimized sound.

5.3. Touch Controls

The top surface of the Sonos Beam features touch-sensitive controls:

  • Play/Pause: Tap the Play/Pause button.
  • Volume Up/Down: Tap the + or - buttons.
  • Next/Previous Track: Swipe across the touch controls.
  • Microphone On/Off: Tap the microphone icon.

5.4. TV Remote Control

If connected via HDMI ARC, your TV remote can control the volume of the Sonos Beam automatically.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Sonos Beam, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior of the sound bar. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Software Updates: Keep your Sonos app and Beam firmware updated to the latest version. Updates often include performance improvements and new features. The Sonos app will notify you when updates are available.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the sound bar has adequate ventilation. Do not block any vents or place it in an enclosed space without proper airflow.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Sonos Beam, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Sound:
    • Check all cable connections (power, HDMI, optical).
    • Ensure the correct audio output is selected on your TV (usually HDMI ARC or Optical).
    • Verify the Sonos Beam is powered on and connected to your Wi-Fi network via the Sonos app.
  • Voice Control Not Responding:
    • Ensure the microphone is not muted (the light on the microphone icon should be off).
    • Check your internet connection.
    • Restart the Sonos Beam by unplugging it from power for 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
  • Intermittent Audio/Connectivity:
    • Ensure your Wi-Fi signal is strong where the Beam is located.
    • Try connecting the Beam directly to your router via the Ethernet cable.
    • Reduce potential wireless interference from other devices.
