JBL 306P MkII 6.5" Studio Monitoring Speakers User Manual
Model: 306PMKII | Brand: JBL
Introduction
The JBL 306P MkII 6.5" Studio Monitoring Speakers are designed to deliver high-quality sound performance for professional audio environments. Building on the legacy of the LSR3 series, these powered studio monitors feature an image control waveguide for exceptional detail and a broad sweet spot, ensuring optimal sound even off-axis. They incorporate updated high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) transducers for superior transient response and deep bass with low harmonic distortion. New boundary equalization (EQ) helps restore neutral low-frequency response when speakers are placed near surfaces or walls.
Key Features:
- Updated HF and LF transducers for superior transient response and impressive deep bass with lower harmonic distortion.
- New boundary EQ restores neutral low frequency response when speakers are placed on the work surface and adjacent to walls.
- Sleek, modern design provides a dramatic flair to any studio.
- Broad sweet spot: neutral frequency response across a wide area allows you to fine-tune your mix even while listening off-axis.
Setup Guide
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove the speakers and all accessories from the packaging. Ensure all components listed in the 'What's in the Box' section are present. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
2. Placement
For optimal performance, place the speakers on a stable, flat surface at ear level, forming an equilateral triangle with your listening position. Ensure there is adequate space behind the speakers for ventilation and cable connections. The new boundary EQ feature can help compensate for bass buildup when speakers are placed close to walls or corners.

3. Connections
Connect the power cable to the AC input on the rear of each speaker and then to a suitable power outlet. For audio input, use balanced XLR cables to connect your audio interface or mixer to the 'BALANCED INPUT' on the rear panel of each speaker. Ensure secure connections to prevent signal loss or noise.

Operating Your Speakers
1. Power On/Off
Locate the 'ON/OFF' switch on the rear panel of each speaker. Flip the switch to the 'ON' position to power on the speaker. A power indicator light will illuminate. Always power on your speakers after your audio source and power them off before your audio source to prevent pops or clicks.
2. Volume Control
The 'VOLUME' knob on the rear panel allows you to adjust the output level of the speaker. Start with the volume at a low setting and gradually increase it to your desired listening level. For critical listening, it is often recommended to set the speaker volume to a consistent level and control the overall volume from your audio interface or mixer.
3. Boundary EQ and HF Trim
The 306P MkII features 'BOUNDARY EQ' and 'HF TRIM' controls on the rear panel to fine-tune the speaker's frequency response to your acoustic environment. The 'BOUNDARY EQ' switch allows you to compensate for bass response when speakers are placed near walls or in corners. The 'HF TRIM' switch adjusts the high-frequency output, allowing you to tailor the sound to your preference or room acoustics.
Maintenance and Care
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your JBL 306P MkII speakers, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the speaker cabinets. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish.
- Dust: Regularly dust the speaker grilles and drivers to prevent buildup, which can affect sound quality.
- Environment: Keep the speakers in a stable environment, away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating.
- Handling: When moving the speakers, always lift them carefully and avoid dropping or impacting them.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Sound | Power not connected or switched off; input cables loose or incorrect; audio source not playing. | Check power connections and switch; ensure audio cables are securely connected to both speaker and source; verify audio source is active and playing. |
| Distorted Sound | Input signal too high (clipping); speaker volume too high; faulty cable. | Reduce input signal level from your audio source; lower speaker volume; try a different audio cable. |
| Hissing/Humming Noise | Ground loop issue; unshielded cables; interference from other electronics. | Ensure all audio equipment is plugged into the same power strip or outlet; use balanced cables; move speakers away from power supplies or other noisy electronics. |
| Lack of Bass Response | Incorrect Boundary EQ setting; speaker placement. | Adjust the 'BOUNDARY EQ' switch on the rear panel (e.g., to 0dB if not near a wall); ensure speakers are not placed in bass-canceling positions. |
