Operating Instructions

The Rhino USA Folding Survival Shovel offers three primary functions: shovel, pickaxe, and pick hoe.

Shovel Mode (180-Degree)

To use as a shovel, fully extend the blade to a 180-degree angle and secure the locking collar. This mode is ideal for digging, scooping, and moving loose materials like dirt, sand, or snow.

Pickaxe Mode (90-Degree)

To use as a pickaxe, adjust the blade to a 90-degree angle and secure the locking collar. This mode is effective for breaking up hard soil, ice, or compacted ground.

Pick Hoe Mode (90-Degree)

Similar to the pickaxe, the pick hoe configuration also uses a 90-degree angle, but the blade is oriented differently to allow for scraping and pulling actions, useful for clearing debris or creating small trenches.

Serrated Edges

The shovel blade features serrated edges, which can be used for cutting through roots or other fibrous materials encountered during digging.

Maintenance

Cleaning

After each use, clean the shovel blade and handle to remove dirt, mud, and debris. Use water and a stiff brush if necessary.

Drying

Thoroughly dry all metal components to prevent rust and corrosion, especially the carbon steel blade.

Storage

Store the shovel in its included carry case in a dry environment to protect it from the elements and prevent damage.

Troubleshooting

Stiff Locking Mechanism

If the locking collar becomes stiff or difficult to turn, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the threads and pivot points.

Dull Blade/Serrated Edges

The shovel's edges are designed for durability. If they become dull over time with heavy use, they can be sharpened using a standard file or sharpening stone suitable for carbon steel tools.

Excessive Wear

While built for heavy duty use, inspect the shovel regularly for signs of excessive wear or damage. Discontinue use if structural integrity is compromised.
