4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage that may have occurred during transit. If any parts are damaged or missing, do not proceed with installation and contact customer support.

4.2 Sand Filling

  1. Ensure the central pipe with the strainer system is correctly positioned inside the filter tank.
  2. To prevent sand from entering the central pipe, cover the opening of the pipe with a plastic cap or a piece of cloth.
  3. Slowly add the recommended amount of filter sand (0.4 to 0.8 mm grain size) into the tank. The maximum filling capacity is 21.5 kg.
  4. Once filled, remove the cover from the central pipe.

4.3 Connection to Pool System

This filter is designed to be used with a suitable pool pump (not included). Ensure your pump's capacity matches the filter's requirements for optimal performance.

  1. Position the filter and pump on a stable, level surface near the pool.
  2. Connect the multi-port valve to the top of the filter tank, ensuring a tight seal.
  3. Connect the pool's skimmer/main drain line to the 'PUMP' port on the multi-port valve.
  4. Connect the pump's discharge line to the 'RETURN' port on the multi-port valve.
  5. Connect the 'WASTE' port on the multi-port valve to a suitable waste line or drainage area.
  6. Ensure all hose connections are secured with clamps and are leak-free. The filter is easy to connect using its GEKA to G ¾″ male thread adapter.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Understanding the 5-Position Valve

The multi-port valve allows you to select different operational modes for your filter. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

Table 1: Multi-Port Valve Positions
PositionFunctionDescription
FilterNormal FiltrationWater flows through the sand bed, trapping debris, and returns to the pool. This is the primary operating mode.
RinsePost-Backwash RinseUsed after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush any remaining dirty water to waste before returning to filter mode.
BackwashFilter CleaningReverses water flow through the sand bed to dislodge trapped debris and send it to waste.
WasteDirect DrainBypasses the filter and sends water directly from the pool to the waste line. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
ClosedSystem OffShuts off flow to the filter and pool. Use for servicing the pump or filter.

5.2 Initial Startup

  1. Ensure the filter tank is filled with sand and all connections are secure.
  2. Set the multi-port valve to the 'BACKWASH' position.
  3. Turn on the pump. Backwash for 2-3 minutes or until the water flowing out of the waste line is clear.
  4. Turn off the pump.
  5. Set the valve to the 'RINSE' position.
  6. Turn on the pump. Rinse for 30-60 seconds.
  7. Turn off the pump.
  8. Set the valve to the 'FILTER' position.
  9. Turn on the pump. The system is now operating in normal filtration mode. Note the initial pressure gauge reading for future reference.

5.3 Regular Operation (Filter Mode)

For daily filtration, keep the multi-port valve in the 'FILTER' position. Monitor the pressure gauge regularly. When the pressure rises 0.1-0.2 bar (or 10-20 PSI) above the initial clean filter pressure, it indicates that the sand bed is dirty and requires backwashing.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Backwashing

Backwashing cleans the filter sand. Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge indicates a rise of 0.1-0.2 bar above the normal operating pressure.

  1. Turn off the pump.
  2. Set the multi-port valve to the 'BACKWASH' position.
  3. Turn on the pump. Backwash for 2-3 minutes or until the water flowing out of the waste line is clear.
  4. Turn off the pump.
  5. Proceed to the 'Rinse' step.

6.2 Rinsing

Rinsing is crucial after backwashing to settle the sand bed and prevent dirty water from returning to the pool.

  1. After backwashing, turn off the pump.
  2. Set the multi-port valve to the 'RINSE' position.
  3. Turn on the pump. Rinse for 30-60 seconds.
  4. Turn off the pump.
  5. Set the valve back to the 'FILTER' position for normal operation.

6.3 Winterization

When preparing your pool for winter, follow these steps to protect your filter:

  1. Perform a thorough backwash and rinse cycle.
  2. Turn off the pump and disconnect it from power.
  3. Set the multi-port valve to the 'CLOSED' or 'WINTER' position (if available) to relieve pressure on the internal components.
  4. Drain all water from the filter tank by opening the drain plug at the bottom.
  5. Disconnect all hoses and store them in a dry, frost-free location.
  6. If possible, store the filter tank in a protected area to prevent freezing damage.

6.4 General Care

  • Regularly check all connections for leaks.
  • Keep the area around the filter clean and free of debris.
  • Inspect the pressure gauge for proper function.
  • Replace filter sand every 3-5 years, or more frequently if water clarity issues persist.
