Emsco Group City Picker Raised Bed Grow Box Instruction Manual

Model: 2340

1. Introduction

The Emsco Group City Picker Raised Bed Grow Box is a self-watering, mobile gardening system designed for growing plants and vegetables in limited spaces. Its unique design promotes healthy plant growth by providing consistent moisture and improved aeration to the roots. This manual provides detailed instructions for assembly, operation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance of your City Picker.

4. Assembly Instructions

Follow these steps to assemble your City Picker Raised Bed Grow Box:

  1. Attach Casters: Turn the grow box upside down. Insert each of the four swivel casters into the designated holes on the bottom corners of the grow box. Push firmly until they click into place.
  2. Install Aeration Screen: Flip the grow box right-side up. Place the aeration screen inside the bottom of the grow box. Ensure it sits flat and covers the entire bottom surface, resting on the internal supports. This screen creates a reservoir for water and allows air circulation to the plant roots.
  3. Insert Water Fill Tube: Locate the opening for the water fill tube. Insert the long, narrow tube into this opening, pushing it down until it reaches the water reservoir below the aeration screen. This tube will be used to add water to the reservoir.
  4. Add Potting Mix: Fill the grow box with a high-quality potting mix. Do not use garden soil, as it can compact and hinder drainage. Fill to approximately 1 inch below the rim.
  5. Place Mulch Cover: Once plants are established, place the provided mulch cover over the soil surface, cutting openings for your plants. This helps prevent weed growth and retains moisture.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Planting

  • Choose plants suitable for container gardening. The City Picker is ideal for vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and strawberries.
  • Plant seedlings or seeds directly into the potting mix. Ensure adequate spacing for plant growth.

5.2 Watering

  • Initially, water the soil from the top until it is thoroughly moist.
  • After initial watering, fill the water reservoir through the water fill tube. The reservoir holds approximately 2 gallons of water.
  • Water will wick up from the reservoir to the plant roots as needed.
  • Refill the reservoir when it is empty. The overflow holes prevent overwatering.

5.3 Mobility

  • The integrated swivel casters allow for easy repositioning of the grow box.
  • Move the unit to optimize sunlight exposure or protect plants from adverse weather conditions.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: At the end of each growing season, empty the grow box, clean the interior with mild soap and water, and rinse thoroughly. Ensure the aeration screen and water fill tube are free of debris.
  • Mulch Cover: Inspect the mulch cover periodically for wear and tear. Replace if necessary to maintain weed prevention and moisture retention.
  • Casters: Check casters for smooth operation. Clean any accumulated dirt or debris from the wheels.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Poor Plant Growth: Ensure adequate sunlight, proper plant spacing, and appropriate potting mix. Check that the water reservoir is consistently filled.
  • Water Not Wicking: Verify the aeration screen is correctly installed and not clogged. Ensure the potting mix is not overly compacted.
  • Weed Growth: Confirm the mulch cover is properly installed and covers the soil surface effectively.
  • Difficulty Moving: Check casters for obstructions or damage. Clean wheels if necessary.
