JacobsParts LTC3780 130W DC-DC Synchronous Buck Boost Voltage Converter User Manual

Model: DCMOD-C

Introduction

The JacobsParts LTC3780 is a high-performance DC-DC synchronous buck-boost switching regulator controller designed to operate efficiently from input voltages that are above, below, or equal to the desired output voltage. This versatility makes it an ideal solution for a wide range of applications, including automotive systems and battery-powered devices.

Utilizing synchronous rectification technology, the LTC3780 minimizes power loss by replacing traditional rectifier diodes with low on-state resistance power MOSFETs. This significantly enhances conversion efficiency and reduces heat generation, ensuring stable and reliable operation.

Product Features

  • Stable Voltage and Current Regulation: Maintains stable output voltage and limits current across a broad range of input voltages.
  • High Efficiency: Achieves up to 98% conversion efficiency through synchronous rectification, minimizing thermal load and allowing for stable operation at higher currents.
  • Battery Optimization: Maximizes battery life and allows devices to operate across the full discharge curve of a battery due to its buck/boost capability. Includes under-voltage protection to prevent damage to lithium and lead-acid batteries.
  • Adjustable Parameters: Features adjustable output voltage, output current, and input under-voltage cutoff.
  • Compact Design: Small physical size (77.6x46.5x15mm) suitable for various projects.

Product Overview

JacobsParts LTC3780 DC-DC Synchronous Buck Boost Voltage Converter Board

An overhead view of the JacobsParts LTC3780 DC-DC Synchronous Buck Boost Voltage Converter board, showing the input and output terminals, inductor, capacitors, heatsinks, and adjustment potentiometers.

The image above displays the key components of the LTC3780 converter board. On the left, you can see the input terminals (+IN/-IN) and an ON/OFF switch header. On the right are the output terminals (+OUT/-OUT). The board features a large copper inductor, multiple capacitors, and black heatsinks for thermal management. Three blue potentiometers (trim pots) are visible, used for adjusting output voltage, output current, and input under-voltage cutoff.

Setup and Connection

  1. Input Connection: Connect your DC power source (5-32V DC) to the +IN and -IN terminals. Ensure correct polarity. The board may include a fuse holder for the input; it is recommended to use appropriate fusing for protection.
  2. Output Connection: Connect your load to the +OUT and -OUT terminals.
  3. Initial Adjustment (Crucial): Before connecting sensitive loads, it is highly recommended to adjust the output voltage.
    • Connect a voltmeter to the output terminals.
    • Apply input power.
    • Carefully adjust the potentiometer labeled for output voltage until the desired output voltage (1-30V DC) is achieved.
    • Adjust the current limit potentiometer if current limiting is required for your application.
    • Adjust the under-voltage cutoff (UVC) potentiometer to set the minimum input voltage at which the converter will operate. This protects connected batteries from over-discharge.
  4. Wiring Considerations: For stable operation, especially at higher currents, ensure secure connections. Some users have found soldering wires directly to the board more reliable than using the screw terminals for high-current applications.

Note: The board may come with potentiometers set to a low value, potentially causing a "fault" indication upon initial power-up. Adjusting the under-voltage cutoff (UVC) potentiometer, often by several turns, can resolve this and allow the converter to operate correctly.

Operating Instructions

Once properly set up and connected, the LTC3780 converter will regulate the output voltage and current according to your adjustments. It can seamlessly switch between buck (step-down) and boost (step-up) modes to maintain the set output voltage, even if the input voltage fluctuates above or below the output.

Typical applications include:

  • General voltage conversion for various electronic projects.
  • Battery charging systems.
  • Solar power applications.
  • Powering LEDs.
  • Automotive electronics.
  • Powering micro-controllers and other sensitive electronic components.

Monitor the operating temperature of the board. For long-term stable operation, the board's temperature should not exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius).

Maintenance

The JacobsParts LTC3780 converter board is designed for durability, but proper care ensures its longevity:

  • Keep Dry: Avoid exposure to moisture or liquids, which can damage electronic components.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the board free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry brush or compressed air for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners.
  • Physical Protection: Handle the board carefully to prevent physical damage to components or the circuit board itself. Avoid bending or dropping the module.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the module, especially when operating at higher loads, to prevent overheating.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Fault light (red LED) is on, no output voltage.Under-voltage cutoff (UVC) potentiometer set too low or at an extreme position. With input power applied, slowly adjust the UVC potentiometer (often requires several turns) until the fault light extinguishes and output voltage is present.
Output voltage is unstable or incorrect.Output voltage potentiometer not correctly adjusted.Verify input voltage is within the specified range (5-32V DC). Re-adjust the output voltage potentiometer with a voltmeter connected to the output.
Board or components become excessively hot.Operating beyond specified load limits (130W/10A Peak, 80W/7A Sustained) or insufficient ventilation.Reduce the load. Ensure adequate airflow around the module. Do not allow operating temperature to exceed 140°F (60°C). Consider additional heatsinking if necessary.
Loose or intermittent connections.Screw terminals not tightened sufficiently or wires too thin.Ensure all terminal screws are securely tightened. For high-current applications, consider soldering wires directly to the board's pads for a more robust connection.
No output, even after adjustments.Internal component failure or manufacturing defect.Inspect the board for any visible damage (e.g., broken components, poor solder joints). If no obvious issue, the unit may be defective. Contact JacobsParts support.
