Setup and Preparation

Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal adhesion and finish quality. Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of loose paint, rust, dirt, oil, and grease.

  • Wood Surfaces: Sand the item to remove any loose paint or rough spots.
  • Plastic Objects: Lightly sand the surface to roughen it, which improves paint adhesion.
  • Metal Objects: Sand to remove any rust or loose paint.

Cleaning

After preparation, all surfaces should be cleaned. Use a lint-free cloth with soap and water, or an all-purpose cleaner. Ensure surfaces are thoroughly dry before painting.

Masking and Elevation

Use painter's tape to mask off any areas that do not need to be painted. For smaller items like hardware, screw them into a piece of cardboard to elevate them, providing a sturdy base and allowing for better coverage. For larger objects like vases or lamps, use a cardboard base to elevate the item, preventing it from adhering to the surface and ensuring even spray application.

Operating Instructions

Shaking the Can

Prior to painting, shake the can thoroughly for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue to shake occasionally during use.

Application Technique

Hold the can upright, about 8 to 12 inches away from the project. Apply paint using light coats and a continuous motion. Start and stop spraying past the edge of the object to ensure smooth paint strokes and prevent drips. Steadily move the can back and forth across the item in a straight line.

Comfort Trigger and Any Angle Spray

The Rust-Oleum Universal trigger provides a comfortable, ergonomic grip that can be sprayed at any angle, including upside down, for hard-to-reach areas. The cap of the can matches the color of the paint for easy reference.

Coats and Drying Times

It is recommended to apply two or more light coats to your project. Allow adequate drying time between coats.

  • Dry to Touch: 30 minutes
  • Dry to Handle: 1 hour
  • Fully Dry: 24 hours

Apply a second coat within one hour or after 48 hours for best results.

Maintenance

To maintain the finish and prolong the life of your painted items, regularly clean surfaces with mild soap and water. The oil-based formula provides rust and corrosion prevention, but avoiding prolonged exposure to harsh elements will further extend durability.

Troubleshooting

  • Uneven Spray/Drips: Ensure the can is shaken thoroughly before and during use. Maintain a consistent distance of 8-12 inches from the surface and use light, sweeping motions. Avoid over-applying paint in one spot.
  • Poor Adhesion: Verify that the surface was properly cleaned and prepared (sanded if necessary) and completely dry before application.
  • Slow Drying: Ensure proper ventilation and appropriate temperature/humidity conditions. Applying too thick of a coat can also prolong drying time.
  • Rust Reappearance: While the paint prevents rust, severe rust may require additional treatment or multiple coats. Ensure all existing rust is removed during preparation.
