Model: 08-0674

1. Introduction

The Motion Pro Chain Tension Tool Slack Setter Pro 08-0674 is a universal tool designed to accurately and quickly measure chain slack on most street and dirt bike applications. Proper chain slack adjustment is crucial for optimal chain life, smooth power delivery, and overall vehicle safety. This lightweight and compact tool is an essential addition to any motorcycle or dirt bike enthusiast's toolkit, allowing for precise adjustments up to 52 mm (2 inches) of chain slack.

This tool is not intended to measure chain-to-swingarm clearance specifications.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when performing maintenance on your vehicle. Read and understand all instructions before using this tool.

  • Ensure the vehicle is stable and securely supported on a stand before performing any chain adjustments.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Keep hands and clothing clear of moving parts, especially the chain and sprockets.
  • Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific chain slack specifications and adjustment procedures. This tool measures slack; it does not provide the target specification.
  • Do not use the tool if it appears damaged or modified.

The image displays the Motion Pro Chain Tension Tool Slack Setter Pro. It features a blue main body with a ribbed grip and a black sliding rod with measurement markings. The tool is designed to accurately measure chain slack on motorcycles and dirt bikes.

  • Main Body (Blue): This is the primary housing of the tool, designed for comfortable grip and stable placement against the swingarm. It features a ribbed surface for improved handling.
  • Sliding Measurement Rod (Black): This rod extends from the main body and has clear measurement markings (in millimeters and inches) to indicate the chain slack. It moves freely within the main body to capture the slack measurement.

4. Setup

No assembly is required for the Motion Pro Slack Setter Pro. Ensure the tool is clean and free of debris before use.

  1. Park your motorcycle or dirt bike on a level surface.
  2. Place the vehicle on a suitable stand (e.g., rear stand, center stand) so that the rear wheel is off the ground and the suspension is unloaded. This allows the chain to hang freely.
  3. Ensure the chain is clean and lubricated according to your vehicle's maintenance schedule.
  4. Rotate the rear wheel several times to ensure the chain is at its tightest point. Chain slack can vary slightly depending on the chain's position due to manufacturing tolerances or wear.

5. Operating Instructions

Measuring Chain Slack

Follow these steps to accurately measure your chain slack:

  1. Locate the midpoint of the lower chain run, typically halfway between the front and rear sprockets.
  2. Position the blue main body of the Slack Setter Pro against the bottom of the swingarm, directly above the chain's midpoint. The tool should be held perpendicular to the chain.
  3. Allow the black sliding measurement rod to rest gently on the top of the chain. Ensure the rod is not pushing the chain down, but merely touching it.
  4. Note the initial reading on the measurement rod where it enters the main body. This is your upper chain position.
  5. Carefully push the chain upwards at the same midpoint until it reaches its maximum upward travel.
  6. While holding the chain at its maximum upward travel, note the new reading on the measurement rod. This is your lower chain position.
  7. The difference between the initial (upper) reading and the second (lower) reading is your chain slack. For example, if the first reading was 20mm and the second was 45mm, your chain slack is 25mm.
  8. Compare this measured slack to the manufacturer's recommended specification for your specific motorcycle or dirt bike model.
  9. Adjust chain tension as necessary to meet the manufacturer's specifications. The Slack Setter Pro can measure slack up to 52 mm (2 inches).

Important: Always refer to your vehicle's official service manual for the correct chain slack specifications and adjustment procedures. This tool is for measurement only.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and accuracy of your Motion Pro Slack Setter Pro, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the tool clean with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dirt, grease, or chain lubricant. For stubborn grime, a mild soap solution can be used, followed by thorough drying.
  • Storage: Store the tool in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keeping it in its original packaging or a dedicated toolbox compartment will protect it from damage.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the tool for any signs of wear, damage, or bending, especially on the sliding measurement rod. If any damage is found, discontinue use and consider replacement.
  • Lubrication: The sliding mechanism is designed to operate smoothly without additional lubrication. Avoid applying oils or greases to the measurement rod or its housing, as this can attract dirt and affect accuracy.
